So much negativity here & elsewhere these days, everyone (well almost everyone there are exceptions) wants to moan & groan, point fingers & generally be gloomy.
So I wondered if a "good news story" thread might catch on. I think we know the answer but let's try it anyway.
All going at a snails pace .... so I'll kick it off.
Good News I can stand on one leg for 30 seconds before falling over. !
Ages 40-49: 40 seconds If you are aged between 40 and 49, you should be able to stand on one leg for 40 seconds. Doesn’t sound like a long time, but as you get older, the length of time you can stand on one leg decreases (Picture: Getty)
I had another football bet yesterday, below. I foolishly thought Spurs might win, and make up for my last bet.
Man City 1/4 Match Odds - Leicester v Man City 14:30 29 December 2024 W Nottm Forest 13/8 Match Odds - Everton v Nottm Forest 15:00 29 December 2024 L Tottenham 4/7 Match Odds - Tottenham v Wolves 15:00 29 December 2024 W Crystal Palace 4/7 Match Odds - Crystal Palace v Southampton 15:00 29 December 2024 L Fulham 13/10 Match Odds - Fulham v Bournemouth 15:01 29 December 2024 W Liverpool 1/3 Match Odds - West Ham v Liverpool 17:15 29 December 2024 Stake £100.00
However there was a happy ending, as I think I must have gone telepathic. I had a look during the last few minutes of normal time. Man City had won, and Liverpool hadnt kicked off. All the others were in front. If the whole bet copped it was just over £2,400. There was no cashing out when I used to have a bet, but I had a look at the cash out figure it was around £770. I thought that if it reached £800, I would cash out. The figure was constantly creeping up, as time was running out. Immediately it reached £800, I clicked the button. So you can call me Telepathic Tony from now on. It seemed like seconds later that Wolves equalised, and a couple of minutes before Bournemouth followed suit. I think I have probably retired from football betting, and will try to put my telepathy to use elsewhere.
My good news story from this year relates to Amber, she's our 8 year old rescued GSD, we rescued her from Cyprus when she was about 9 months old. She absolutely brilliant, highly intelligent and the most friendly and affable dog we've ever had (and we've rescued a few over the last 30 years). She just loves running and will run and play all day long. Sadly in August she started limping and after consulting the vet we tried aqua therapy and physio but she didn't improve, after changing vets the new vet suggested we have her X-Rayed as she still hadn't improved.
Sadly the X-Ray appeared to show bone cancer and although the prognosis was awful we hoped that a referral to a specialist would give us some options as, untreated, she probably only had a matter of weeks.
The X-Ray also showed numerous shotgun pellets in her, so it looks like she was shot before we got her too, she obviously had a tough start to life.
The poor thing is such a great dog and really didn't deserve this, it looked like we had some tough decisions to make.
Anyway now the good bit! The specialist second opinion said that the growth was NOT cancer after all but calcinosis circumscripta which is a benign lesion, most often seen in GSDs and develops during the first year of life, it was not causing her lameness. Her actual problem was a dodgy back (much like her owner), stenosis of the lumbar spine and narrowing of the 7th lumbar disc, causing lumbar nerve root entrapment, however she's now on some specialist anti inflammatories and is mostly recovered, back to chasing squirrels and acting like a puppy again.
So all in all it was definitely a reprieve and we're chuffed to bits.
Ok this is a good news story, somewhat personal but it may help others.
In March of 2024 my son was the victim of a spurious allegation from his wife of 10 years. The immediate upshot of which was arrest, conditional bail and restrictions as to who he could and couldn't, where he could go etc etc.
To say his mental health nosedived would be an understatement. He moved in with me and his Mum and we witnessed a total collapse including self harm, manic depression and 2 attempts to take his life.
I ended up sleeping downstairs with the front and back door keys hidden and a lock on the kitchen door to prevent access to knives etc. However as he was in our home it was considered by the authorities as a place of safety and they steadfastly refused to admit him against his will to Harplands, the local mental health hospital, despite his self harming.
Through all of this we learned that he had contact with his wife, despite this being a breach of his bail, and that she was promising to attend couples counselling and such if he sought help for his depression and mood swings.
BUT, what she was actually doing was using the fact that the matrimonial home was off limits to him to move another guy in. As if this wasn't bad enough she was still stringing my son along with the everythings going to be all right line. My son only found out when his eldest a girl of 9 let it slip whilst he had the children for a visit.
To say that absolutely shattered his world is putting it mildly and I honestly thought that we'd lost our precious son, I couldn't see him making the end of the year. Even the No Further Action from the Police regarding the accusation failed to lift his spirits
However, come early June and I received a phone call from Child Services, and in a nutshell, his wife had been arrested for neglect and abuse of the children, girl 9, and sons 5 and 3, and could he take custody of them or they would be split and placrd into temporary care.
The transformation was remarkable, yes they had nowhere to live, yes they had no money, little in the way of belongings and it did look bleak, but they had love and that's sometimes all you need.
Fast forward to today My son and the children have just celebrated Christmas in their own Council House, the children are flourishing at school, the social workers are really happy with the way everything is going and the future looks promising. Yes there are still tough times ahead but they have love and support. I get up every morning and travel accross the city to get the kids into breakfast club, me and the missus attend school events along with my son to just be there and show the children that they are loved.
Not every day is good. Son still has bad days and March will be rough as it's her court case and she whilst still his wife is expecting this other mans baby, but like everything else, we will get through.
So, a new year beckons and the fact that my son and his 3 children can spend it as a family is to me a great feel good, good news story.
All going at a snails pace .... so I'll kick it off.

Well I'm 59 and managed over a minute on each leg, however I could certainly feel the muscles working and !'m sure it's a good exercise for leg strength. I will add it to my exercise routine which now consists of
1. Standing on one leg for a minute 2. Stand on the other leg for one minute 3. Drink beer as reward.
A 12-year-old girl in Scotland designed a solar-powered sleeping bag for her homeless neighbors
The Primary Engineer MacRobert Medal competition asks UK students: “If you were an engineer, what would you do?”
And, seeing “so many people sleeping rough on the streets of Glasgow,” 12-year-old Rebecca Young knew: she wanted to help members of her community facing homelessness.
So, the Scottish student invented a solar-powered heated blanket with the goal of helping unhoused people keep warm.
Her now award-winning design is integrated into a backpack and powered by the sun, allowing for easy, on-the-go use.

So so good. I'll be honest, I welled up a bit.
