For me, Starmer is much better at Foreign Policy and dealing with World leaders than Domestic Policy and dealing with ordinary people.
We can all argue just how good he is on the World stage. Or just how bad he is at communicating stuff to us mere mortals. And there would be a range of opinion.
But-much like Sunak before him-he is essentially a decent, honourable man. And, on the World stage at the very least, we need more people like him.
Meanwhile, some of his increased popularity stems from his commitment to increased defence spending. From voters confident that this will be funded by people other than them....

Ignore the finger-pointers & the serial moaners. He is, essentially, a good man, as it Sunak. Made mistakes? Of course. That's not a sin though.
What a society we've become, moaning about everything & everyone. Life in the UK is great, it really is. Try living in Gaza for a month, or one of these Refugee Camps...
And if some of those condemned by circumstances outside of their control try to get to the UK for a better (or less worse) life for them & their families, good luck to them, let them come.
