Making notes on players...

Since I started playing poker online I haven't consistantly made notes on any players, mainly because I don't know how to best make use of it.
I know that to be successful on the tables notes need to be made, so would anyone be able to give any advice on the best way to make notes on opponents play? When I've attempted it previously it seems to get messy and uncoordinated. Any examples or advice on techniques would be greatly appreciated
