hi low hand should i have won low?

help please  hi low tourney  my cards A86J         FLOP 49K   TURN 7 RIV  8        VILLIAN 5269         villian wins high and wins with 8 low     ,  am i missing something here ?

    His 52 is lower than your 6A

    he has 87452
    you have 8764A

    the best way to compare lows is to read the cards like a five digit number, with the highest number first

    he wins hi with the str8 using his 5 6  for 56789
    he wins low using 5 2 for 5 2 478

    you dont say what sooots ur cards are, or how the betting went but even double sooted its not a fantastic starting hand

    ty for ure help am just a beginner at this and thought that the low hand was good because of ace  yes it was a bad hand to  go on but i was short stacked
