Hitting a set and getting value

Hi I hit a set on the flop and out of position. There is two people in the pot who called a hefty preflop raise - so the pot is already quite large. There is a possible flush draw on the board (though this could equally apply to a straight draw) do you think it is best in these situtation to check and let them possibly bet, but risk a free card coming off that could help. Or just to bet out and protect you hand.

Would you do the same protection bet in a two handed pot (out of position)??

If theres a flush draw on the board and IMO unless you take the odds away from them so 4/1 then alot of people are going to call a raise so u might aswell build the pot at this point and hope the nxt card is safe and if not way up the situation on the river and the turn

I think most times in this situation I bet out and protect my hand. This may not make you much money but will certainly stop you from losing even more money.
