Well thanks for your comments guys and it appears now that I am now to be known as WC.. lol

This thread shows that the members of this site have a a V.G.S.H unlike the the people whom run this site and forum, I have never had one comment of offence from any member because the conitation as to any sexual reference is so obscure you have to be either a nun or very petty minded to be offended. No doubt my comments will earn me a forum ban I suspect even though our forefathers fought and died so we could have the freedom of speech.

Oh! by the way my real name is Mr Hunt but you are more than welcome to call me by my first name Isaac!

    Hi Wayne,

I'm very sad to hear you think that, but it's a view you are entitled to hold.

    For what it's worth.....

"Cardroom" aliases & "Community" Aliases have to be the same, so just because it is acceptable on the Community, it still gives us a problem on the Cardroom, because of the fact that Sky Poker has a TV Channel.

If such names were (knowingly) shown on 865, especially during a Sky Sports simulcast, we would all be in serious trouble - Sky Sports would snap ban our weekly simulcast, & the Channel Head, as well as the Producer & Presenters/Analysts, would all be in hot water, sacked possibly.

We might all think that's daft, & you can lob insults at us for it, but even more so in the light of the Gray/Keys affair, I'm afraid we have to be very careful indeed. We don't make the Rules, but we follow them.

As to Greg Hogg & others who comment that there are far worse names registered, he is quite right. If they became Forum Regulars, or were potentially to have a hand shown on 865, their aliases WOULD be changed, but we'd have staff vettting the player database 24/7 if we wanted to check every one "just in case".

It is nothing to do with, as suggested by you, "freedom of speech", it's just a case of being sensible, & accepting that, from where we sit, Rules have to be followed. We are Licensed in a particular manner, & there is no reason why we would want to jeopardise that licence just so players can indulge in edgy aliases.

Some might take the view that instead of mocking those at Sky Poker & 865, the players who have deliberately selected offensive or "non-PC" names may take a share of those brickbats, too.

In my case, for the reasons I have explained above, I wholly agree that some aliases are unsuitable for our Cardroom, &/or 865, most especially when being simulcast on Sky Sports. You must trust me on this - if one of those names "got through" & went up on Sky Sports, staff at 865 would be sacked. That's just the way it is. I don't believe you'd want that, not for a moment.

PS - For myself, I'm neither a Nun, or petty-minded, but you are assuming I or others would be offended. We are not offended in the slightest, that misses the point completely. We have Rules we are obliged to follow, & standards to uphold.

PPS - To my knowledge, almost every single Online Poker Room bans "offensive" aliases. There is good reason for that. It's not because they are "petty-minded" at all, but not everyone has the same tolerance to offensive names, references, or profanities. And so it behoves us all to show just a little tolerance to others, as it costs nothing.

Have a good weekend. I hope you & your good lady are well, your pub is stll serving that delicious food, & business is good.

Thanks, Liam. Sometimes people don't realise why certain rules are in place, & I think it helps if I try to explain it, that's all I was doing. I hope to put up a series of "why do we do this?" type Posts in the next few weeks, to help promote better understanding.

I happen to know "waynce", having driven 400 odd miles to help support a very worthy cause he was raising money for, & he is a lovely chap. We spent some "off-record" time together, so I was a little surprised he described me & my colleagues in the manner he did, as he knows me better than that.

What a result last night, for Sue & Dave! I'm off to find the thread, as at least that'll be a nice warm thread!

I agree with everything you said Tikay, but why cant the player in question be allowed to pick another, not have one thrust upon him/her, i think this was the bone of contention

I have no idea, loony, sorry.

But I do know that in a previous such example (different player), the player was asked to change his alias, & came up with a similar (but far worse) new alias! He did that three times in a row, & eventually a new name was imposed upon him. By then, a whole bunch of time had been wasted on the matter.

You might equally argue why a less inappropriate name could not have been chosen in the first place?

If the name is deemed improper, it is the right of the Site to change it. And if I did not want the site to mess with my screen alias, then I'd pick one that was compliant. These things cut both ways!

Until a while back, several of us on 865, me in particular, regularly made "leading comments" when a flop of 4-K-4 fell on a Televised hand. Then, the Channel Policy was tightened, & we have  subsequently refrained. After the recent Gray/Keys thing, all the on-screen 865 peeps were reminded in no uncertain terms - "watch yourself, be careful, STAY ON MESSAGE".

It's just the rules of Sky Poker, Channel 865, Sky Sports, &, to be fair, society in general. Not everyone enjoys that sort of thing, & just because they don't enjoy it, does not necessarily make them "petty-minded". I accept those Rules, though I have a clear choice. Accept them, or not be part of the Site.

    Quite an eye-opener, this thread!

You may not know the answer to this tikay, but did someone on skysports news get sacked then when an expletive was mistakenly written on the info bar at the bottom of the screen in place of the word "shot" a few months back? Quite ridiculous if so.

I don't really know, yb, I heard the same story, but I don't know if it was true, or apocryphal.

It's how life is these days. People argue for greater freedom, to say what they like, push the boundaries ever further, but as soon as someone on TV steps over the line, the "knocking-mob" & the Media  - including those who promote a more liberal approach - whip up a storm & the person has to be dismissed.

The older I get, the less I understand how people square all these peculiar oddities.

If I come round to your house, I have to respect the rules there - be it no-smoking, no swearing, no bad language, or whatever. And the "trouble" is, TV goes into lots of people's houses, so the decency threshold has to be set quite high.

I don't swear that much off-screen, but I do swear, of course I do. But if I did it on TV, I'd be snap-sacked. Them's the Rules, & I can have no argument with that, & I don't.

You could request the change, but they would not grant it. Screen-Names cannot be changed by choice, or on a whim, only when it is necessary.

I do not believe the correlation you have attempted to make would occur to anyone. It needs a certain sort of mind to make that connection, & I'm delighted to say very few would have the peculiar leap of imagination necessary.

    I actually wrote......

".....I don't swear that much off-screen, but I do swear, of course I do....."

In certain company, where I know it's perfectly acceptable, & I can control where my convo goes, I swear a lot. Which is the whole point, "a time & place for everything". On TV, we cannot know who may be watching, so a far lower threshold is needed. In private company, the Rules are quite different. Hence why I found the thread so bizarre - it's surely not that hard to grasp, is it?

Because I stay in line on TV, does not make me "petty-minded or a Nun".
