correct fold?

all of my bets were made in order to receive maximum value, hence the bet sizing; i though my hand was good.
consequently however, the river brought about so many chances for my opponent to have me beat.
it would be strange for him to be holding either a 4, or a 9 (given the possition from which he raised), & its unlikely he would shove with a flush on a double paired board, but i folded
was the fold bad?
were my value bets that which caused me trouble?

    well i think the fold was the right thing to do here as its way too risky. Its a stage one, surely he has'nt got a 4 as he really should be reraising post flop and if he has a 9 its a bit of a weird call on the flop as he has nothing unless holding A9. i would'nt rule the flush out here as he probably does not have you on a 9 or a 4 either.

    i think you can bet slightly bigger on the river like 3.50-4

    there's every possibility he reads your river bet as weak, and shoves over the top. You bet 2.10 on the turn, then 2.20 on the river... that looks very weak indeed.

    But I think ruling out a 4 is a bad idea, initial raiser could have a huge range- 34/45s are probably in his range, and maybe he decided to really slowplay it.

    Tough, tough spot... my instinct says he hasn't got the house or flush and is acting on your river weakness, but it's still a very difficult call to make.

    i agree that the river bet does nothing more than confuse the situation here (in that consequently, i have to contend with the possibility that he is bluffing as well as the possibilities that he has better cards), thanks for the comments!
