Recreational Bankroll?

Im currently trying to grind at the mo to get my BR up to £160 so as I can move up stakes. I have always been a cash player on NLHE but because im so busy grinding im finding abit of the "fun" draining out of this game i love so much.

So i have taken to playing small MTTs and other poker varients which certainly break up the monotonous grind, but obviously cost me money to enter (and time - i have work and other commitments which make grinding harder). So its taking alot longer to grind.

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to set aside a small propoertion of personal money each month - say £30 or so - which I deposit as a recreational bank roll so I can play MTTs and some of the forum games which look great but usually cost to much of my BR to enter.

I can easily afford to deposit to do this - and lose it, but was wondering if its a good idea. Is it going to detract from my objectives and/or cause me any other problems with my cash game? Just want to inject a little bit more fun and varience into it is all.

I deposited £20 around week or 2 weeks and a half ago after withdrawing most my roll , i now have £225+

I have mainly built up with DYM £5.50 & Cash, where as Mtt's sort of slowed it a bit but after a couple of binks probably helped it now, i think my main loser is satelites for SPT/Sky roller.

IF YOU WANT TO BUILD A ROLL DO NOT PLAY FORUM CASH IMO, maybe the odd STT would be ok. in regards to Mtt's i think best way is play Dym's/ cash and win enough to freeroll tourneys whether £2.20 or £5.50 whatever suits that way it doesnt affect your bankroll too much and can still build it with the tourneys thrown in and if you run well it will obviously help alot

The forum cash games r perfect for building a roll.

Why would you put him off playing them?

The standard is awful.

Middle pair is the nuts.

If you play properly in them, you can't possibly lose.

I agree to an extent but.... they have higher variance then normal cash games so imo are not good for the bankroll, generally they are aggro so if someone wants to build a bankroll i suggest they dont play them simples

I think that would be ok as long as you don't then tilt off  your actual bank roll after a suffering an horrific Doh 2 outer river on the forum cash games.

Personally I'd just use my time to build up my roll so then I could comfortably play any game that I wanted to.

To put in my tupennyworth ; I don't play cash I rarely play S&G's and never DYMs . I focus on MTT's and Sats to big tournaments. The idea of grinding it out seems to me , as you say, to turn poker into a chore rather than a challenge or fun.
 I think you do better to focus on one discipline rather than mix it up . Certainly by doing this with MTTs I am enough in profit now to bankroll the rest of the year without worrying about it. Try different things , yes, but concentrate on each one at a time . As they say Jack of all trades , master of.....

yeah....I did this last year after i managed to get to £180.....sat down for a few hours while very very drunk......it did not end at all well and fun is deffo not the way I would describe my feeling in the morning lol!!

i dont see any problem sticking an extra tenner in every so often to play a few tourneys if you dont want to touch ur cash bankroll, and also if you have a good session theres no reason not to use a little on a tourney for a change
