Sky Poker Opinion.... Our favourite poker player of all time? [Article]

edited August 2011 in Poker Chat
Hi all,

I am going to put together an article on who is our favourite poker player of all time, and rather than just include my own thoughts on the subject, I thought it'd be good to get as many views and quotes from the Sky Poker Community.

All suggestions are welcome, even those who think Richard Orford's win at the SPT Leeds side-event qualifies the man :) Best comments and quotes will get a credit in the article.

As Delia Smith once said, "let's be 'avin you!"

Phil Ivey is a great player. Most people believe he is a mind reader, but I know he just stares at you until you wet your pants and have to muck your hand.

i've always enjoyed watching Daniel Negreanu but with the no speaking rules, watching poker is in general a lot less interesting

He steps way out of line at times but one of my favourites is Tony G. hes what televised poker is all about. He makes for great banter and makes the dynamics of any poker table very interesting.

Have to say I like Gus Hansen. Entertaining to watch, a luckbox and conducts himself well at table.

Personal favourite 'pro' is Allan Cunningham.

Favourite to watch is Durrr tho.  Also really like Lex Veldhuis.

From the Brits Praz Bansi is something special and after a few hours of playing against him in person, he does have a certain air about him while in a hand.

By a million miles it's Chip Reese.  The only guy to really understand the long time psychology of the game.  He would react the same way to a year long downswing as he would to a million dollar win.  Zero tilt, total class, and while he didn't play many tournaments ('Why should I give lessons for free?') he took down what is now called the Players Championship on arguably the hardest final table in history.  After he died they made a trophy for that tournament and named it after him.  That says it all.

Totally agree with this - Chip Reese was the best pro people really didn't know, mainly because he chose not to go for the exposure that came with playing the WPT events. What happened when he did play one? He final tabled it. He played a few more after but always shied away from the public gaze. He simply chose to get it quietly, and he got lots.

    Quality player.

This is still one of my all-time favourite hands of poker, too. Just shows you how well Chip and Doyle knew each other's game...

    Mr Hellmuth....

A plank or a prodigy? The marmite man of poker

Phil Hellmuth is my favourite player because he is the man that got me interested in poker in the first place. The man that got me off to a winning start with his "super tight" but aggressive mtt strategy

Ok, he acts like a clown sometimes and he can be disrespectful at the tables. But, i believe it is all an act, and a cleaver one.

Poker consists of a wide variety of characters and whatever you think of him, i would rather sit at a table of 6 phil hellmuths than 6 peter eastgates because poker is a social game and supposed to be fun. I could laugh at Hellmuth for hours!!

So for me, the 11 bracelet man is my favourite player. Am i embarrassed by this choice? Probably, because he is not the most technically gifted player and he can act like a complete moron at times. But, without Hellmuth, and characters like him, the global interest in poker would not have been wide as it is now. Also his record, and again this year (3 2nd places at WSOP) is very impressive indeed.

Besides, i want to see his next redic WSOP entrance so i can laugh at him again.

A player I've enjoyed watching recently is Huck Seed, he appears to be a gentleman at the table, and nothing seems to get to him, and he is also the master of the prop bets, I don't think theres anything he wouldn't be willing to bet on.

I used to enjoy watching Daniel Negreanu, but I feel he has lost the plot  recently, and is just becoming a caricature of himself, and that he has lost some of the edge he had.
