There must be something that can be done?!

Whilst commuting to work this morning, like many others, I read of the terrible plight in Somalia in the paper.  The drought which is killing hundreds of thousands of children and adults alike.  It's so bad, that Dads are committing suicide at an alarming rate, so they don't have to watch their babies/children die over the coming weeks.

I'm a Dad, like many others on here (I've seen the kids adorning the profile pictures etc), and me running this thought through my head over and over has made me feel sick inside.

I'm off to the races tonight, I see all the affluence, the quest for the next $ or £ or the next gadget; don't get me wrong, I'm in the aforementioned crowd like most of us on here, turning a blind eye to what's going on.

Sky are a carbon neutral, giving, envinroment aware, rainforest rescuing company. The bigger picture and all that.  Surely this is something, where we as a community, using Sky Poker as a vehicle, can do something.  Whether a little or a lot?  But to save 1 child, 1 daughter, 1 Emily, 1 Dad from watching their child die...?

Appreciate we're not members of the November nine and we don't have access to $10's million purses/bankrolls.  But maybe we could do something, hold a daily tournament over a week, £5.50/£11 entry, maybe the rake could be waved as well as the complete prize pool (this going to Somalian drought fund), but the prizes are donated by members of the community/or Sky / Sky Poker

1st - A wander around sky studios, meeting Jeff Stelling et al
2nd - A wander around Elsa dog's spaceship ;)
3rd - SPT grand final seat
4th - A website of your choice building and designing by DTM75
Etc etc

This probably won't get very far, but wouldn't it be something if we could get a few thousand ££s together.

Am a software engineer by trade, would be happy to donate my time and for example build and design a website of the winner's choice etc etc

Hope this doesn't come across as over the top, would just be great to get a 40 page thread like Denis' DYM spin 30p to £200.

Thanks

Dan

    Hi Dan,

A very worthy Post, & yes, the Somalian drought is a quite dreadful tragedy. Those of us that can afford to play poker would be inhuman if this did not present us with a moral dilemma, as we moan & groan about bad beats whilst kids in Somalia are dying of starvation.

The situation with Sky Poker supporting various Charities is complex - they try, as a Group, to focus all their attention on pre-agreed Charities.

That does not prevent individuals from donating directly, however.

From bitter personal experience - very painful stuff - there is also a problem with "promoting" Charities on Poker Forums. I'm not entirely sure of Sky Poker Community rules in this respect, but I have a hunch that "Charity Threads" are frowned upon, but with good reason, if that makes sense.

Let's see how much feedback you get. Please be assured, if you get some momentum going on this, I will support it personally, in any way I can, both financial & practical.

    Hi Tikay,

Thanks as always for the considered response.  Apologies if this does contravene the community rules and I've potentially opened up a can of worms, far from the intention; am massively naive at times :(

Regardless, if it rouses a few people (myself included) into action, before it gets pulled/moved then it's  worth it.  Just thought I'd say something amongst a group of like minded people, who as the months pass on SkyPoker are becoming friends.

No apology needed, Dan, none at all, but I thought it deserved an explanation.

Someone suggested a "Charity Tournament", with all prizes going to charity. That would be beset by immense legal difficulties, & I'm almost certain that it would not be possible to run it
    .

These things are never as simple as they seem at first sight, I'm afraid.

For now, you've raised awareness, & that in itself is a positive.

its a great idea in theory but as tk says it must be complex to run with all the legal issues.......maybe sky could put on a freeroll with no money invovled just few freebeeies such as hoodies spt entry etc....maybe top 5 get a prize..........anyone wanting to play could volunteer to pay here.....

    http://www.unicef.org.uk/landing-pages/donate-east-africa/?gclid=CPetpIP3lKoCFQol3wodnwaZxA&sissr=1

i'm not sure if links like his are allowed so no offence taken if removed.
(my tenner is on its way).

ps .....i think this is a great op......if im honest things like this seem to pass me buy and i usually miss donating to such things unless its children in need/comic relief e.t.c

so well played dtm75 for bring it up....

Hi dtm75 you have made a very worthy post and what you have seen happening in Somalia has clearly affected you. I have children and grandchildren myself and dread the thought of anything happening to them. But sadly Somalia is not the only place in the world which would benefit from humanitarian aid. And therein lies the problem I feel. Let's assume Sky go along with this idea and run a suitable tourney that is a success and raises money. Then I come along and ask Sky can we do another tourney and raise money for street kids in Brazil for example. What I am trying to say is that most people have their preferred
charities and Sky would have to draw the line somewhere. Would it be fair to say yes to one cause and no to another? Sky could not possibly support everyones favourites. Please don't think I'm trying to rain on your parade, it's a credit to you that you made the post and if anything did come from it then I would support it wholeheartidly.

Would it be totally out of the question for Sky to announce their own charity tournament like another well known site did for victims of the tsunami?

Agree 100% sir, the thoughts, after my OP have been to all of the other suffering/causes, both at home and abroad and the complexities that you mention.   There are 100s if not 1000s of equi-worthy charities to aid truly horrific scenarios that unfold around the world; all which need and deserve support and each will have those supporters who have an affinity with it.

A case of spieling into a forum without prior thought.
