Hi guys my view on tilt. 1:why do we tilt There are lots of reasons, bad beats 1 outers runner runners etc.... It is really how we allow it to affect us. 2:Reasons Well there are a few. Some players believe they are actually better than what they are.Which means they could of run good so that could give itself false view on their ability. Some people just can't stand losing. Some people go crazy if they don't hit every flop,it does happen. Some people take the game to seriously. 3:Affects on your game. You are going to get worked up and therefore not make the correct decisions. You could also swear at opponents, which does none no good. You could of played real well and then undo all your hard work by tilting. You will not be in the right frame of mind, you will lose make no mistake about it. 4:Do i tilt. Yes of course i do.I don't care who you are and what level you play we all tilt. 5:How to combat tilt. Perspective is the word.I can only speak for myself but this is how i cope. I was watching the imformation channel and the wsop came on.It focused on jen harman john juanda and allen cunningham.I enjoyed the show so much i joined sky and nicked the players initials to make jjjach.I don't think i thought i'd ever be as good as them.I thought i'd get bored playing on the freeroll tables and say i think poker is boring. That was nearly 3 years ago.So i just love poker as much as you all.I'm a micro stakes player and play against micro stakes players. They will call my all in with k2 and flop 2 pr v my AA.That i what i want i'll take them calls all day and everyday.I will win overtime,as it has proved i will never be a pro that's for sure, but have made a few hundred quid this year.To play for free is my aim,if i lose i don't mind as i love poker and if i make a few quid all the better.I will always give these guys the benefit of the doubt. They could be brand new to poker.Just moved up from the freeroll or maybe they are just not very good. Then again who am i to have ago at them if the play a hand badly and knock me out.I will never tell anyone how to play as it's their money.Besides i play micro stakes poker and make the incorrect poker decisions almost everyhand. To me poker i just a game.We all want to win but we must remember that we will lose more than we win.Poker is a logical game played by illogical people. We are merely human and have emotions. We have family and friends that we love.We play poker because we love it.Perspective.......Gl at the tables guys.Remember this is just my opinion.
Nice post JJ. I'm more of a Sigh!! Guy than a TILT guy.
I accepted a long time ago that losing and getting bad beats or having the worst hand once the river is down, is just part and parcel of the game.
I never tell a player at my table how to play, even if he's rubbish, why would I want to lol? If I get sucked out on I sometimes comment to myself (Swear if you like) then move on to the next hand. I'm not saying it's not frustrating having your aces cracked as many time as I have lol, but I have learnt to deal with it.
That being said.....I do take tablets for high blood pressure, so that probaly stops me from smashing up my PC from time to time lol.
I think the sooner a player learns to deal with the frustration of bad beats without going off on one, then their game will be a whole lot better for it and your decision making after a bad beat will be a much better one later on in the game.
Like I said jj thats a great post you made and everyone who has a problem with tilt should aspire to handle it as well as you do, me included. Sometimes my reactions to a bad beat are not a good example to set especially when I have responsibilities as a VC. Unfortunately I'm still prone to the odd rant in the chatbox but part of the problem is the way I now view poker. Like you I found my love of poker through TV and was purely a recreational player still playing play chips for quite a while. Poker was only a pastime and I was pretty awful at it. 2 things changed my game. After blowing about £50 on 2 poker sites I bought a decent book that taught me the basics correctly and switched to Sky Tv so now had access to Sky poker channel. After a few months of watching and learning on 865 I deposited on Sky poker and found I had improved my game and could now make money at it. And therein lies the problem of tilting. Like a few players on here I'm on a very limited income and poker has supplemented that income very nicely and now I don't view poker as just a fun thing, although I still love playing it and hope I always will. It's now become a form of income and because of that I value every buy in I make and every time I enter a tournament my aim is to win it. When a player doesn't appreciate what a 4x raise preflop means and calls me with his 63 off and knocks me out of the tourney still affects me more it really should. But I know it's exactly as jj has said to me loads of times, it's their money they can play how they want and overall we will win but the chance to win that MTT has now gone.
The other day exactly that happened ko'd by a shocking call when I shoved allin preflop with AK and villain who just about had me covered calls with A6. I had a little rant in chatbox and another player who I'm quite friendly with commented "dignity Dagg". He was quite right and I hoped to handle things better in future and not let things like that get to me as much.
Unfortunately in last nights DTD things did not go well. Went out of DTD 1 in 189 when I couldn't seem to get away from hands and tilt raised it's ugly head. Knew it was mostly my fault and got too aggro in the others so exited DTD in the space of 15 mins. Should have stayed around to rail but was so peed off with things I logged off for the night. Like jj said it's perspective and in the grand scheme of things a 2 quid tourney isn't life or death.
Sorry for going on a bit but I really do need to change how I react and hope I can do it.
i have been playing poker a good few years on this site but what always gets me the amount times the player with the bigger chip count 9 out 10 times wins the hand even though he has the worst hand
Very wise words JJ (must be all that CC,lol) Luckily my sense of humour helps to stop me going on tilt and the perspective that JJ already mentioned- i have a lovely family and friends and their health and happiness is more important to me than winning poker games. Yes i play to win and poker has been a welcome distraction when things in my life were not going so well, but i appreciate that i am just an average player so any cash is welcome and i like the banter just as much as the play. I think a lot of players feel that just because they win a few times it's everyone else's play (and the dealer) that stops them from continuing to win and forget that it's not just skill that wins tournies. Why else do we wish each other good luck? Why i love playing poker on this site is definitely because of the players, especially the ones in this team
So good luck all TPTers and i wish you all have a very merry Christmas in case i don't get to play the DTD on Christmas Eve.
