Multi-Tabling Madness????

With all the talk of late on the forum being about the New 'Sky rake race' and the rush for C4P i thought i would take the time to give an alternate view on the multi tabling madness that seems to be occuring of late.

For the record i am niether for or against mutlitalbing but for the purpose of this post i will be arguing against.

There are several threads running at the moment follow players on thier C4P challenges, which if succsessfull stand to net them at least a £3k pay day at the end of the month, which lets be fair is decent money for sitting on your backside with the laptop out, id take it.
However in the days of old before internet poker, in the bygone era, there were succsessfull and still are succsessful cash game and tournement players making enought money to live without the need to play 4-8-10-12-20 tables at any given time. Nor did they rely on rake back to supplement thier earnings. They either payed the bills and ate well or they starved and scrambled for a new BR to get going again, depending on thier skill level.

So the big question, is it all nessisary?

Are these manic players who are spending 6+ hours a day grinding thier lives away cashing the rake race really still enjoying the game, or is it just a case of play an hour - check the balance, not high enough? Easy play another hour ect.
Most of these players by thier own admittance make more mistakes when multitabling and are essentially missing great spots to make a move or take down a pot because they can't remember the action thats past. We all love it when you have been watching a particualr game unfold for a period of time and then see a spot to make that one brilliant move that take down the pot you had no right to be in but you had to do it just to outwit the opponant. For me at least that is the most fun and rewarding part of the game we love, and I fear for some at least this is lost in the eternal never ending battle, points win prizes.
Don't get me wrong i will load up more than one table from time to time but as soon as i start to lose track of the games or stop enjoying the game for what it is i will shut them down just as fast. I hate making huge errors and can't just say 'oh well back to table 17!' for me it's not that easy to shake off.
I would rather play a couple of tables to the best of my ability and take my own reward from that win or lose, rather than grind away midlessly with the thinking that i could happily lose £2k this month but as long as I hit 50,000points that £1k in profit?? your still a losing player.

Does anyone else shre this view??? or can you expand on my thoughts, there was more i wanted to say but it seems to have slipped my mind when i got halfway down.

Cheers Kyle

It was possible in the old days to make good money just by playing 2/3 tables.

The skill edge that 'pro' players hvae has decreased.  Even the casual player now has a fairly good grasp of the basics of the game and they generally don't hand out stacks easily anymore.

I admit that by playing 18 tables I do make some mistakes, but I think that the ends justify the means.

I have 10 tabled on Sky for the last year or so and ahve shown a profit using that strategy,

However, by fully concentrating on just the 2/3 tables would see my winrate/100 hands shoot up but my overall winnings would go down as I couldn't get the volume in.

Scotty do you enjoy playing 18 tables at once as much as you enjoy playing just a couple and having being able to conentrate and make good reads and good folds ect.

the buzz you get from playing well rather than just playing the percentage shots, or the likley range game. Which is what 18 tabling must feel like all day long.

Or is it just now about the money and aas long as it's comming in and not going out, you take your enjoyment in that???

    Cheers

Can see what you mean kyle, by it not being as much fun, i personally still enjoy it when playing 10 or so, couldn't play the game withoutnloving it and hating it sometimes! Some people who are on everyday though without fail need to take a long hard look at their lifes imo

i agree to a point goldenkyle, but the way i would see it, if i was a pro ,was that it is a job, a job that i sit on my backside playing on a lap top earning me x amout of pounds. its work and prob 80% of people dont "enjoy" there work they get cold, wet they work with people they cant stand, they sit in traffic jams or on over filled trains then to be taxed 40% of there hard earned cash.
if i were a pro this knowledge would be making me grin from ear to ear and if i had to play 16 tables to earn a living then  so be it.
ps at the end of a big grind they can always switch to a nice structured mtt to wind down and chat with other players over a beer.

for me its a case of i've multi tabled for so long now that i play worse when playing fewer tables because i get bored and try to make moves in every pot

also, i love poker but probably wouldnt keep playing if it lost me money.  for me the most enjoyable thing is winning money.  i get no enjoyment whatsoever from owning someone and losing to a suck out even if i did play it well

This. I can't single table anymore without getting bored after level 2. Its a bit sad really :(

+1 to Scotty's reply, thats what I was going to put. Years ago (way before I played I'm only 24) The difference in skill level was rediculous, there wasn't all these training sites and TV shows to learn from. Ed Giddens made a comment on the thread about him saying how much the skill level has changed on sky in just the last 5 years or so. Imagine what poker was like 20 years ago? I wish I was around playing then. So basically what we are saying is you need to spread your smaller edge over many tables to get a bigger edge.
