sitting out during live poker

hi, besides playing on line at sky i play in a live tourney game on a wed night down at our local club.
We always allow players who are goin to be a bit late through work commitments etc. to enter & be blinded out.
Last night one of the lads had to play a pool game which took over an hour so when he got back he was short stacked, in fact he was surprised to be still in.
Hey presto...he ran over the table & won much to the displeasure of a couple of players he took out.
Their beef was that being allowed to sit out was only allowed in on-line play & was noy allowed in live play.
Could you please settle this argument

Nothing wrong with sitting out. Phil Hellmuth is actually quite famous for being late for tournaments, doesn't seem to do him much harm.

Loads of ppl register late for tourneys and in most poker clubs/games they get blinded out. if he has paid his entry then its up to him when he turns up

I think there was a debate whether it was fair to blind them out but thats a different matter

Sit outs in live poker just create's a silly dynamic with blinds open to steal - re steals

I think there is a rule in some casinos/pub games that after so many orbits a sit out must post a blind every hand,
I could be wrong so am open for for a more knowledgeable person to correct me.

In Response to sitting out during live poker:played in a casino tournament recently, one player at my table was late,  as ordered by the managment, he was big blinded every hand until he arrived.

Will depend on the club rules we run a couple of local pub games where the rule is you can be late upto the first break 1 hour your chips are blinded in as you go. Late entries into comps where they are allowed usually mean you have to post extra blinds when you arrive

To be honest, I completely disagree with that rule above. Surely when you pay you're buy-in, you purchase the chips and have the right to do what you want with them, whether that be folding every single hand or shoving all in pre every single hand.

I think a guy who is sat out should be treated no different from someone who sits down at the table and says (truthfully), I am going to be folding 100% of hands regardless of the situation.

As someone used him in an example above, I think Hellmuth's results would be very different if he'd been forced to pay 1BB every single hand for the first hour or more of each tourney.

I have played live at SPT (Sky Poker Tour) and sat out on many occasions - sometimes for the loo and sometimes for a smoke or just to get away for a bit after winning a big pot.

It's all quite normal - You have paid your entry fee so you shouldn't be penalised for sitting out. The dealer usually just takes away your blinds when they come round.
