Thanks Penguin - lets see if this works

First some history. I have been playing Poker now for about 6 years, mostly live in Canada, before I returned to England mid last year. Based on the lack of local live casinos near me in Lincoln I opted for the online route.
I have been playing on this site for about 6 months. Three major things I enjoy a) Play in £'s b) The Forum and c) The TV Channel. My live experiences in Canada showed a small profit but I have not had the same success online.
My last deposit on Sky was in October. This went the same way as previous ones in 2011. During September I reached a bankroll of about £400 but lost it due partly in my opinion to a) not playing under correct conditions (I would regularily grab 5 mins whenever I had chance instead of making sure I had at least an hour uninterrupted time to play)
b) total disregard for bankroll management. Playing well above my bankroll consistently. Two tables at 20p/40p (this didnt seem very high as I was used to playing $1/$2 in Canada, but on reflection that was live) or short buying 25p/50p (really enjoyed these games but I know I should firstly always buy in for max and secondly should be playing at much lower limits, I had some good days where I would win £50-£100 but also some days I would lose that)
c) variance and unlucky (well I couldnt tell my wife I wasnt any good could I, Ive been playing a few years now and she thinks I should be winning, plus I used to bring money home when I played in Canada lol)
d) poor play - think I have been fishing and bluffing too much

I normally allocate £150 per month to poker as money I can afford to lose but dont want to of course. My wife convinced me (or told me) to put £100 in a savings account and £50 to Sky each month. Sometimes she has good ideas but I wont tell her that. At least I will have £1200 at end of year towards my next Vegas trip.

So today, £50 has been deposited. Whats the plan?
a) only play when I have at least 1hour uninterrupted available
b) play 1 table 2p/4p until or if bankroll moves to £120 then add a second table and add a 3rd table at £200
c) if get up by 2.5 buy ins on a table then cash out and reselect another table
d) only move up to a higher level when bankroll reaches £320 and start again at 1 table
e) only play mtt or any other game - timed, sng, dym IF winning on cash table for that day. All of these should be £2.30 or less until bankroll at least £320
f) create a daily stop loss of 2 buy ins thats 2 x £4 = £8 to start. Never deployed a stop loss before but seems a good idea. Thats gonna be a tough one to stay disciplined, especially if I lose early in the day.
g) tighten up my game, play more abc poker.
h) keep a spreadsheet of records.
i) once I get a bit of a bankroll invest in a mentor to help my game - any offers?

All this sounds reasonable, lets see what happens. I will post my results here daily if there is interest. I believe by doing so it helps me keep focused and disciplined. Any comments on the outlined strategy would be appreciated.

See you at the tables.

Sounds like you have thought it through well. As you say it is a matter of having the discipline to stick to the plan.

An hour uninterrupted should be the bare minimum (with no distractions too). You need to be able to keep going if you find a table where you have an edge. Then more time to review your play too.

The wifes plan is poor though, Vegas is a long way off at £100 a month.

Why not an SPT weekend in Nottingham in September ? Play the Grand Final or just a bit of cash if you prefer.

    Not far from Lincoln !

    Good luck

    a good thought out post.

only thing i would say, it can be a slog n take a long time grinding 1 table to reach £120 before adding another. its more than possible to revise this figure down

1 tabling NL4 will take you like 8 weeks to get to £120. I have a blog where I am trying to turn £50 into £5k and I'm playing about 10x the volume you are planning to play, and I dont expect I'll be finished before end of April. A noble challenge, but I think it will be futile and incredibly boring for you.

Consider playing headups sit and go's instead, where the rake will be less punishing on you, and you will see more uniform returns on your time.

To answer your origonal post, yes you definately can.

If you have confidence, patience and dicipline.  At uni I saw my housemate run $10 into 2k in 5 days at dym'a and multi tabling cash, just building and moving up..

I remember hearing that Ferguson ran up 10k from freerolls and profits from freerolls, just to show you can.  People likely know more specifics than myself on this.  Also is maybe slightly jaded now in anycase :p

If you have the disipline to stick to your plan I think you have a great chance of success.

Good luck, please let us know how you do.

Firstly, your wife sounds like a very sensible lady.

    Secondly, best of luck.

Stay disciplined and focused and I'm sure you can do it.

Good luck on this but i think playing one table this is going to take for ever, i have built mine up from 30 to 70 3tabling and it has taken me nearly a week of TAG poker.

id say at least play two tables with solid poker your nit likely to donk of £50 in a single month plus more tables more chance of C4P.

Anyway good look prob cya at the tables.

    Thanks for all your comments.

Very interesting about 2 tabling earlier and I think I will just bite the bullet and do it.

Maybe SPT in Sep is an option, I am longing to get over to that place.

So closing down now for day 1

    + £3.54

    Closing Bankroll £53.54

Thats all playing 1 table NL4

It should have been more but I made a stupid mistake. Called about a £4 all in on turn when I had top pair and nut flush draw. STOP CHASING MOONBEAMS. When will I learn.

Still at least the day ended in profit so its off to bed and on to day 2 tomorrow.

Yep with £50 you can defo 2 table at least, as long as you're playing tight standard NL4 strategy (read DOHHHHHHH's blog etc) you should do fine. 1 tabling like many have said will probably push you over the edge, infact I don't even think it's physically possible to do lol.

OK Just closed it down for the day. I would consider it a successful day at these levels.

    Days Profit £13.11
    Profit to Date £16.65

    Closing Bankroll £66.65

Played for about 7hrs today - all single table NL4. I am planning on stepping this up to 2 tables tomorrow as many of you have suggested.

Not many hands of note, it was generally just grinding away. Although 1 hand this afternoon I had nut flush and 2 players before me went all in for about £4 between them I think, poker players dream. Needless to say I scooped a nice pot.

If there is interest I will continue posting.

    Just completed Day 3.

    Days Loss £12.32
    Profit to Date £4.33

    Closing Bankroll £54.33

Once again played about 8 hours NL4. Probably about 50% 1 table then stepped it up to 2.
The day was very up and down, but  ended on a big down.

Two hands during morning where other player had top pair 10s both times and I had AA once and JJ the other. Got me up nearly £5.
Then in afternoon session I had AK, 2 players went all in QQ and I cant remember other hand. King came on flop so I was ahead. but river 10 came and gave other player straight - pot was about £9. Down £1 for the day now - need to grind away. Started up 2 tables and clawed back to even for the day. Taking a break and start again on 2 tables NL4 this evening.

Started off OK but another big pot lost - I had KK and another player bet big with 77. A 3rd 7 came on river. About a £6 pot I believe. Thats poker folks. Not running well today.

More negative stuff my KK ran into AA who went all in preflop - lost another £3

Now my 3 7's are drawn out by a flush on river  -- geeeeze

OK thats it - gonna knock it on head today - its not meant to be.

    Theres always tomorrow - lol

    Just completed Day 4.

    Days Loss £2

    Profit to Date £2

    Closing Bankroll £52

Played NL4 on 2 tables for couple hrs in pm. Down just under £2. Thought I would try the £2.2 timed to see what it was like.  Won £4 so £1.8 profit, back to even on day.
First session this evening lost £2 from 2 tabling NL4. No major hand losses or wins to talk about.
Fora change tried the £2.30 BH no joy.
Increasing this bankroll at NL4 is really tough. Well for me anyway.

Four days is still a very small sample, don't let the the lack of progress so far get you down. I can assure that all players, including the very best on the site, regularly get losing spells of 4 days or more. At least you're slightly up, it could be much worse. I'd lost 8% of my bankroll after the first 2 days of my £51 challenge, now I'm surging ahead. Keep focussed, you can do this.

Jake Cody deposited $10 when e was 18, and never looked back! so yeah i think £50 should be enough :)

    Just completed Day 5.

    Days Profit £8

    Profit to Date £10

    Closing Bankroll £60

Thats better, roll is going in correct direction again.

Played NL4 on 2 tables for about an hour this morning, up £2

Midday session called 2 all ins preflop for about £3 total. I had 77 - not sure it was the correct call on my part, opinions please. I luckily spiked a 3rd 7 on flop was up against QQ and AT. So nice win, but on reflection dont think I should have called 2 all ins.

Short session early evening where I added about another £2
