Away players & Players sat-out

Hi,
Im pretty new to poker and i was wondering if someone could explain the difference between "Away" players in MTTs/STTs and players "Sat Out" in cash games.

Also why "Sat-Out" players don't get dealt cards but "Away" players do?

Had an incident when i first started playing (in a DYM).
I was in SB and the BB was "Away" , action was folded to me so i made a min raise (with rubbish) expecting the Auto fold.
In that split second i looked down to click the player had sat back in and took my chips ! :(

Cheers KTF!

    Welcome.

In tournaments "away" players have already paid their entry fee to ther tournament. If they choose not to play, they still have to post their blinds as normal, but their hand will be folded to any raise. So they will be blinded away until their stack is so small they are automatically all in.

At cash if a player sits out, he is totally excluding himself from the hand and so is dealt no cards. To prevent players simply sitting out when it is their turn to post blinds, they will be required to post any missed blinds if they sit back in.

If in a tournament or STT  you have an "away" player sat to your immediate left it is a big advantage as you can often steal their blinds. But always be aware that they could rejoin the game at any time. And it also may change the opening range of the players to your right.

Tournament players do not often sit out deliberately to trap you, it may have been due to connection problems or other reasons.
