Bankroll what?

Hey everyone!

I keep hearing people talking about bankroll management and I have some questions because I don't really have a system. This is not a problem as I usually make profit but I'm wondering if I should have one. Anyway, the general concensus seems to be "don't play with more than 5% of your bankroll at any one time."

1. My main question is WHY 5%? What is the logic behind this figure? It seems a bit arbitrary to me.

2. Can you increase this number the more confident you get in your own ability or do the top players still use this?

3. Does anyone have any other ways of doing it that I haven't heard?

Thanks

Luke

    Hi magicman,

Its actually 4% is what they say you should play with in 1 sit n go.  Reason is that no matter how good you are, you will get a run of bad beats at one stage in your poker career, trust me.  By using 4% it gives you 25 buy ins and therefore giving you the best possibility for variance to even itself up.  It is just a guide however and you play what you want......but if you ask me, bankroll management is top priority, and if you start chasing your lost money by going into bigger buy ins your asking for trouble.

    regards

Yeah I totally agree with this and that's why people say play bigger buy-ins when your ahead, not behind. But why would you need 25 buy-ins. Surely if someone's going to lose that consistently they need to look at their actual game rather than their b/roll management.

This is part of the reason I asked the question: I wonder if people often start blaming their b/roll management instead of admitting they need to change their game. Anyway I'd be interested to know what people think about this so  can make an informed decision.

its very easy to have a bad run, nothing to do with skill level either. 30 bins is a common occarance. there are some very good players this mnth alone that have had 40 +swings. it normally evens itself out in the end. if you havnt had a 20+ swing yet sir, its commin :-)
