Time to move up?

Been playing skpoker on a recreational (between 2 -5 games a night, about 3 nights a week) but still competitive and fairly tight basis. I think I've been doing OK as I've made a profit. I play predominately DYMs, £5 tourneys when I have at least 4 hours to spare, and the new time limited games heve proved to be a happy hunting ground.

I've also had a couple of decent wins in re-buy tournaments (£3 and £5). Re-buys I've enjoyed but get a bit nervous if I end up re-buying 4 - 6 times but, you really want to get back at that donk who made an unbelievable call and hit lucky! I like re-buys as many people play really loose in the re-buy stage and then seem to not adjust when the buy-in period ends. My tight style seems to work well in these tourneys.

I didn't start off too well and was nearly £100 down at one stage, but you learn from your mistakes e.g. chasing blinds and not folding when you know you really should, just because you've got some chips in the middle.

I feel my stats, taken from sharkscope are pretty good.

Games Played:  469
Average Profit:  £1.63
Average stake: £5
Av. ROI:          40%
Total profit:      £764
Ability/100:      74

My current bankroll is around £200. I was thinking if I can get it up to around £220 I could move up to £10 buy- ins.

Time to move up to £10s or stick to what I'm currently comforable and feel I can make a bit of profit? Are players at £10 level that much better?

I said this a few months ago but i'm saying it again, your username REALLY tilts me, I always read it as "double elbow" :/

For DYMs you can cope wioth 22 buyins if you a good at them, but MTTs are much moar variancy

£200 is a bit of a push for £10 DYMs, I'd maybe like to get up to about £250 before going for £10 ones. But I would stay well away from playing £10 MTTs regularly with that roll, you could easily not cash in 10 in a row even if you play well and that's half your roll gone. You can play the odd one and fund it through your profits in DYMs but it's dangerous to play £10 MTTs with a £200 BR.

Be care reading too much into your sharkscope stats on rebuys... not sure if its been fixed but it didn't use to record rebuys in your total loses for a tourney.. i.e you play a £5.50 rebuy and you rebuy once and add on. Your total loses should you lose are £16.50 but sharkscope would only record it as a £5.50 loss.

    Great word !

op, it's not broke, dont fix it?

You're profit is 4x your bankroll, so you must be withdrawing frequently?

If you wanna get more serious & move up just stop withdrawing your profit (at least for a little while) until your roll is maybe 400 quid?

From experiance I would advise NOT moving up to £11 DYM's with £220 unless you can actually run like God, you can very easily lose 4/5/6 in a row playing perfect poker by which point 25% of your roll has gone.

For me just continue how your doing until you have around £400-450 then maybe move to £11 DYM's where there's less pressure to start REALLY well and you can handle a few beats which WILL happen.

    As for MTT's I wouldn't play £11 ones regulary without £900-1000 minimum.

if you are going to start playing 11 dyms.. then u need 25 to 30 buyins.. min....  like ppl have said, u can easily lose 5 games on the trot..  there are a lot of reg at 11s. who win and lose, but they have the roll to take the hits.. my actual worst run in 11s is 10 games losing..  that wud be half ur roll..

if you want to go upto 11s, then please read JCs blogg about br mgmt....   when u get to a level where you can afford the 22 buyin.   try one.  if you lose go back down a level until u can afford the next level..  if you win fine, but if u drop below the 22 buyin,  then u must drop the level..

look forward to seeing u on the 11s infutre, then the 16-50s and 22s

I tried this myself but again from experinace I found it very high variance in that you feel super pressured into winning those first 2 games in order to move on up to 24/5/6 BI's etc, and if you don't you need to grind back up again which doesn't always happen straight away.

My personal strategy is to build up till you have 40BI's at the level then give yourself a 15BI swing before you drop down, doing this would leave you with 50x BI's at £5.50 if things go bad which is enough imo to NEVER go broke.

I also realise JC was able to do his challenge doing 22x route but he's also MUCH better than me and the vast majority of players lol

Give yourself enough in your BR FOR 3 shots at next level

    aim for

    W2
    L1

    then spin another 3

You need sharkscope for £11 level imo, more capable regs

You don't need to totally change levels, why don't you just stick to mainly £5 games, and then if your in the mood and feel your playing well then play some £10 games. If it works then greak, if not then go back to £5 games and rinse repeat.

Also, why is everyone talking about DYMs? He has clearly said he plays MTTs

Thanks for all the comments, some useful pointers there.

Guess I will have to let my bankroll go up some before I play £10 MTTs. I'll give £10 DYMs a go if/when I get to about £250. If I lose 3 or 4 then go back to £5.

I think NColley is right about sharkscope stats on re-buys - I remember thinking at one point that sharkscope total profit didn't quite tally with my actual profit so my actual profit is probably a bit lower - not by as huge amount but lower nevertheless.

I've got a couple of weeks off work coming up so I should get a lot more games in.

I'll let you know how I get on!

My friend play excelent poker, it start from money managment, it is the most difficult part of this game especially there is no thrill or horror happend when you devoted to your money managment. It is simple you need 300x 400x buy inn on your bankroll and when 400x is maked you can go up.
Now ask yourself question is easier to play nl4 with 1200 on your account or harder :) ? I know is rough having money and just use small procentage from it, but my friend says that he check his plays he play really good and yet he was 14 buy inns down and he couldnt stand this that he lose 1/3 of his bankroll, that when he change his thinking, now losing 14x4 =48 from 1200 you still dont feel that you are beaten to the ground. So just be patient, play the limit you feel comfty and dont make your poker change your mind status, is still just a game so manage your finance first and then climb. Poker wont finish any soon so just drill your game and build bankroll and that make your game much better. Good luck!

Well, I took the general consensus of advice which was build your bankroll before moving up. Just as well! From when I made my first post have been running not good.

I went about £50 down at one point, now about £40 down. If I'd had the same run playing £10 buy-ins I would have lost half my bankroll :(

But because I stayed at £5 the loss is manageable. I don't think I was playing badly - I hope not. But I think my stake:bankroll ratio was right so I can ride out this downswing.

    So, thanks again guys.

Up to £273 bankroll now. I reckon another £100 and I'm in to £!0 buy ins.

Cuh, what's this cash game stuff. Played a few games now and I can't believe how different it is. Still can't work out if they are better players or if I'm just rubbish at cash. Definitely sticking to 2p/4p games there until I understand it better and why it is so different to tournament play.

Personally i,d stick with the £5 ones - As someones already said if it aint broke

If i were to get to £500 then i would play the £10 DYM,s and see how it goes

Looking on sharkscope all your money actually comes from tournaments which it seems your very good and consistent at with an excellent ROI of 82%. With the DYM's your at 3% ROI and down $51 with a very swingy graph. Your regular SNG's your at 22% ROI but with a swingy graph.

Looking at it overall it looks like you shouldnt be moving up to £11 DYM's. Possibly moving down and working on your DYM play at 3.30. For the tournaments and regular SNG you should probably stick to 1.10-5.50 while your build more bankroll and play the odd £11 with winnings for a treat like the 6k open. I am sure with your win rate at tournaments you can build enough BR to be rolled 50BI for them and be comfortable.

Thanks for that analysis cgoldie. $51 down at DYMs :(

Had a bad, bad run on DYMs, didn't cash in 10 games but still surprised I'm down overall.I can't do custom searches on sharkscope so thanks for that.

SNG is swingy but overall trend is up but your right, my performance at scheduled tournaments is miles better. Looks like I've been concentrating on the wrong thing! Scheduled tournaments are only about 40% of of my games - need to up that percentage.

Its weird though - its all poker, you're trying to take the other players chips but you can be so much better in one style of the game than another.

No more than £5 buy ins for me at the moment.

Thanks for the help guys. I've been fooling around on-line for a couple of years, but have now decided to improve and be more successful.

And its definitely not time to move up!
