So its goodbye but not farewell - The goon finally lands a job - A reflection on my poker experience

So thats it lads and lasses, finally I managed to bink a job in the city after my longest spell (in fact my only spell!) out of work. The job will inevitably mean long hours and very little poker time.

I guess its now time to reflect on my game, which I must say in some aspects I am very pleased in the way its developed over the last 10 months but also very disapointed at how my core game (hu sngs) seems to have gone to pot after I stopped working (anyone who has scoped me will understand what i mean). So heres my summary:

I came back to sky in December 2010, my previous flirtations with the site 2007/08 ended because there wasnt enough player numbers and my main game then was limit holdem cash, which died when the americans wernt allowed to play online poker.

I started playing the turbocharged hu sngs, and managed to show a tidy profit over the christmas period, I was playing mainly £5 hu games and sometimes flirting with the £10 games but not rolled for it. Over the period from December 2010 to May 2011 I showed a £2k profit playing purely hu sngs, when I was made redundant last March I was thinking that this would be a nice way of earning a few bob on the side while I took a break from my career.

So I stepped up to the £10 hu sngs and started looking at higher levels as BR would dictate. As things panned out, ive lost around £4k at sngs since last may, I dont think theres any fundamental changes in the way ive played, just ive been running into better daytime regs. On the face of it this doesnt look very good, but one thing has saved me, cash for points. Any low-mid stakes player cannot disregard the benefit of the rakeback scheme sky offers and I know that the scheme has been revamped but the rakeback I received more than offset any losses I incurred playing sngs.

I also flirted with the turbocharged DYMs for a month, but quickly after analysing stats with JJ came to the conclusion that this game was very difficult to beat. The rake killed any potential profit and the variance on this discipline is huge. Sadly sky have not responded to the dramatic decrease in volume of turbo dyms since hypers where introduced last september. The only way anyone will now take these games seriously is if sky reduce the rake to 5%.

In September, the great DOHHHHHH/JJ suggested that a new format of hu sng which was very sucessful on pokerstars was adopted by sky. To give sky credit, they embraced it and even called the new games "sit and dohhhhhhh"! I ditched the turbocharged games for this more action packed variant of hu sngs. For the first month I was flying made around 1k playing 10 quid hypers. My enthusiasm for hu sngs was reborn but sadly as was the case with turbocharged hu sngs, again I went on a downswing taking me just up before to the christmas period when I decided its time to look at other poker disciplines, ever since I havent played half the volume of sngs as I used to.

The one thing that I am very pleased about (and I am trying to give an honest balanced account of how things went!) is how my cash game has developed. Ive played all levels from NL20 up to NL200 (although in hindsight nl200 wasnt a good idea!). In December 2010 I was a total cash donk, today I feel that I can sit at any cash table up to nl50 and have a +ve expectation, a large part of this improvement can be put down to the educational side of the site being in a position to review hands in the poker clinic and bouncing theories off regs. I watched mastercash religiously and took onboard what the pros/analysts had to say, sky is a unique site in that sense. Another pleasing aspect of my cash game is that I can now comfortably multitable 6 cash games at the same time . It was strange stepping up from 2 to 4 then 6, but its like anything in life you get used to it the more you try something.

I have not played anywhere near the MTTs to make a meaningful analysis but I did have some limited sucess on another large site. One thing I would say about skys schedule and I have brought this up before it that there isnt one meaty mtt that starts between say 6:30 and 7:30pm. I think sky are missing out on the workers who have to be up at the crack of dawn that want to play a decent game that finishes at a decent time.

Finally id like to say a few things about the community ive got to know some great people, the likes of hoggers young gun, the_don90, 4fingersAA, pokerkinga, splashies ohh and I suppose I should mention a certain dohhhhhh who although I hate to admit it and his head will explode with this, is probably one of the best low stakes players on the site. His technical knowledge is impressive and he really should be stepping up soon, its a shame he cant cook though!

So there you have it, back at work on the 5th March very excited about the future just sad that it wont involve a large volume of poker playing. I will be watching the programming and perhaps pop up in the odd MTT but the volume wont be anything like it has been for the last 18 months or so. Its been emotional!
