Hi all,

I've noticed talk recently of GPC dying out and I think it's a great shame so it's my aim to single-handedly lead the force in rejuvinating it (with the help of everyone else posting obviously)

So there have been similar threads to this in the past but we've had quite an influx of new forum-ites recently so thought it would be good to have a bit of a get to know you. So anyone who wants to introduce themselves, in the style of 865's 'My Name is...' please join in.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself...

2. How did you get started with poker?

3. Favourite starting hand?

4. What's one piece of advice you would give to a player looking to improve his game?

5. Favourite Film? (let's not have it all poker related)

6. Favourite Poker Player?

7. Proudest moment in your poker playing life?

There will be many more interesting threads to come, and I'll be starting up another series of the HU Championship (Tikay, would be grateful if you could let me know if a prize can be arranged), so keep your eyes peeled on GPC for that so you can get your name in before all the places are taken!

    1. Tell us a bit about yourself...
I live with my girlfriend Emma who always plays on here (Llamas), we have 3 kids, Lily (four), Leah (nearly two) and Nevaeh (Nevaeh just turned 6 and lives with her mum and I have her on weekends). So yeah we both tend to only play in the evenings when they're off to bed. Only ever really played recreationally but I've had hundreds of hours of fun and probably made about £500 profit over the last 6-7 years... not breaking any records but it's been a free hobby

    2. How did you get started with poker?
I used to always play snooker with my mates in my mums garage when I was young (we had a 6ft table) then after us all watching Late Night Poker on channel 4 for a while, we decided to start playing, and it rapidly got to a stage of us playing for about 6-7 hours 5 nights a week, just SnGs where we'd all put £1 or something.

    3. Favourite starting hand?
AA obviously althought I'm quite partial to a nice JTs

    4. What's one piece of advice you would give to a player looking to improve his game?
Realise how important position is, and how a playable hand on the button like KJoff becomes completely unplayable UTG.

    5. Favourite Film? (let's not have it all poker related)
    American History X

    6. Favourite Poker Player?
Definitely Daniel Negreanu, brilliant player, seems like such a nice guy and he likes to have fun and a chat at the table (like me)

    7. Proudest moment in your poker playing life?
I once bought into an MTT on another site, it was $0.10 to buy-in with 3500 runners and I came 2nd to win about $200, nice ROI! :)

    1. Tell us a bit about yourself...
Umm.. im 21, left school when i turned 16. Studied Computing at collage but a dash of Glandular fever followed by Plourisy meant i missed a large chunk of the coarse and failed. Im a qualified Youth coach by the SFA but as of yet have never used those qualifications to any good use.

    2. How did you get started with poker?
My Dad was having a home game and i decided to to ask to join in after watching for a smalll while. I was 15 at the time and took the bug. I did however have a credit card and signed up to an online site, However not knowing much about the game i quickly gave up. At 18 i found a local pub poker league and re-built myself from there.

    3. Favourite starting hand?
    10-8 of clubs

    4. What's one piece of advice you would give to a player looking to improve his game?
Always be open to advice, while also be willing to try new things. Nothing should be done in set manner.

    5. Favourite Film? (let's not have it all poker related)
Rounders hands down, but as we're not going poker related i'll probably have to say, Theres only one Jimmy Grimble

    6. Favourite Poker Player?
Theres a young up and comming Irish guy i met at a UKIPT. Hes not as good as the big name pros yet but he is exceptionally good. Watched him a few times online since i met him and keep in contact. Probably one of the best young tournament players.

    7. Proudest moment in your poker playing life?
Probably the day i proved dohhhhhh wrong. I found these 128 runner $2 HU winner takes all tournaments on a different site. I played one on day 1 and made the semi finals. The next day i planned to do both to increase my chances. Dohhhh said id be llucky to cash once a year and since i made a semi final the previous day i virtually had no chance.

I buisted out of the first one in round 2 but made the final in the other one. Dohhhhh tried to re-assure me there was n pressure. Followed by "$256 or f all." Which for someone who never really invested alot into a single br would have been a nice kick start. Pressure time. I was watching the other semi final while waiting and i felt that i had an edge on both opponents. Obviously the 10 mins of watching them did help.

About 3 or 4 hands in it had mostly been raise from the button BB folds. However on the 4th or 5th hand i was BB sitting with 56 (not sure if it was suited or not but was defo 56) the button min raised and i flatted. flop comes 553 i lead for the pot and he overbet re-raises. (bet around 200 from a 1500 stack) I clicked back pretty confident he had an overpair and he shoved. I Snapped and he had 93, 2 on the turn ended the hand.

Great shout for your favourite film there Sporny! Always used to hover between whether I liked that or The Holy Grail more, and I think it's The Life of Brian, the only thing I don't like is where he falls off the tower, into a space ship and that whole scene of him being in the spaceship, bit too 'zany' for me even by Monty Python's standards

In favourite starting hand, you should put non-premium in brackets IMO, obv I'd love to see AA all day, but other than that K9  - KQ of blues are the best!

    1. Tell us a bit about yourself...

My name is Jim. I live in Newcastle, play poker for fun on my days off. Im also a big sports fan and watch a lot of football and boxing. Rugby league fan as well.

    2. How did you get started with poker?

I signed up to Skybet to make a free bet on the football, then fell in love with poker while frittering away my free tourny chips.

    3. Favourite starting hand?

I like suited gappers, invisible to bad players at my level.

    4. What's one piece of advice you would give to a player looking to improve his game?

Play lots of hands. ALWAYS show aggression when you think you are ahead - dont be tempted to slowplay.

    5. Favourite Film? (let's not have it all poker related)

Die Hard or Rocky 4. You can quote these films all day and you cant beat a 'rocky montage' montage to raise your spirits - whereby you skip from montage/fight/montage fight and cut out the 'acting'.

    6. Favourite Poker Player?

Liv Boeree for obvious reasons. I liked Redmond Lee's style on the uk cash game.

    7. Proudest moment in your poker playing life?

Taking 8th place for an £80 cash in my only live game, the friday freezeout at Aspers.

    1. Tell us a bit about yourself...
I'm 19, from County Durham, and have been playing poker for a living for about 6 months now (started with a modest bankroll). I'm into horse racing and I'm also a Liverpool fan.

    2. How did you get started with poker?
I started playing poker in various formats when I was around 13, 14 with mates. During my intended gap year after college I started playing Sky Poker at the micro stakes as a losing player but started to study and learn the game whilst experimenting with the game. Whilst working I decided to make a £500 deposit and built up a roll to play nl50 (40-50BI). I then proceeded to quit my job and ive been playing for a living since.
    3. Favourite starting hand?
    THE BUTTON!!!

    4. What's one piece of advice you would give to a player looking to improve his game?
Learn to run good, how to flop sets, get AA when someone has KK. No seriously, don't be afraid of a new level the games don't really change as you move up as there will always be regs and fish at the tables. The regs get better as you move up but the fish are still, well..... fish.

    5. Favourite Film? (let's not have it all poker related)
I have a few, Inception, Bourne Trilogy, Saving Private Ryan, Catch me if you can.
    6. Favourite Poker Player?
    Luke schwartz and Phil Laak.
    7. Proudest moment in your poker playing life?
Still to come.... Up until about a month ago I was horiffic at playing tournaments, however I have been improving this format and hopefully will ship a biggie this year.

    3. Apart from the obv I also love 9 10 suited pref diamonds won loads of big pots with them.

    4. Analyse hands you think you have played badly, post hands on the forum and ask for advice there are plenty of top players on here who are always willing to help which is the best thing about this site.

    5. My fav film prob has to be Rocky 4 (quite sad) or more recently I thought Limitless was quality too

    6. Daniel Negreanu without doubt.

    7. Prob my 3rd in the primo, was my first big cash (and still my biggest cash), I remember my heart was POUNDING, but there was a fantastic rail helping me on.

V good thread, get diaries moved, trim a few of the sections and more threads like this in GPC then forum will be pretty good.

    1. Tell us a bit about yourself...
Im Ben, 20 years old from Doncaster. Student at uni atm, altho i dont like it, tempted to quit lol. Dont have a job, student finance ftw.

    2. How did you get started with poker?
Not too sure with this, cant really remember, saw my dad playing before and remember going pub to play with everyone +20 years older than me lol. Then just got going online with the free £10 sky gave me, started on the main one i think then downloaded lots of poker clients and settled here.

    3. Favourite starting hand?
22, can remember winning a few big pots with it when flopping a set. Only one time it let me down was when i made $900 on one table of 100nl on full tilt, stayed up all night one tabling. Blew some bluffing then played higher, 532 flop, other guy had 33, and the quick demise of my money started lol

    4. What's one piece of advice you would give to a player looking to improve his game?
Mix of what others have said really, listen to others, +
    practice, practice, practice.

    5. Favourite Film? (let's not have it all poker related)
Not too sure, got quite a few. Inbetweeners movie! what teenager dosen't have this as his fav movie...

    6. Favourite Poker Player?
Tom Dwan, guy is just different class imo, some of his bluffs are like none other.

    7. Proudest moment in your poker playing life?

Turning $100 into +$900 on one 100nl table on full tilt when i was a newb was pretty epic. Quickly lost it all cos BRM was a forign word to me. Won roller other week as well for £2k which was nice!

I came over from Germany 7 years ago and it looks like I'll be staying for a while.

    2. How did you get started with poker?
Started out with a play money app on my Android phone, then donked off some money on FT before slowly improving and figuring out what games suited me. Moved to Sky Poker ofter FT closed down and I'm very happy here.

    3. Favourite starting hand?
I never hit with pretty speculative hands, so big pairs all the way.

    4. What's one piece of advice you would give to a player looking to improve his game?
Don't limit yourself to just hold'em. Omaha is great fun, and I hope over time other games will be added to Sky.

    5. Favourite Film? (let's not have it all poker related)
This one is hard and the answer changes frequently, randomly picking one from my top 10 I came up with Dogville. Greatest movie ending ever.

    6. Favourite Poker Player?
Durrrrrrrrr! I wish I was half as smart and fearless as him.

    7. Proudest moment in your poker playing life?
Qualifying for TSP through the league playoff.

Being a total narcissist when drunk I'm going to have to reply.

    1. Tell us a bit about yourself...

Aged 38 but got asked for proof of age in Tescos last week. Got an 11yo son but ain't with his mum. Instrument mechanic to trade but am currently a Project Supervisor. Don't ask me how. Born in Edinburgh, live in Wick. Love/hate Hibs.

    2. How did you get started with poker?

Lying stned watching Late Night. Devilfish is coooooolll! On SkyBet drunk one afternoon and saw poker. Tried a nl100 table and spun £100 upto £250. Lost is all with Top Two (!!!) and punched walls it was so unfair. Been addicted since.

    3. Favourite starting hand?

10dJd or 3c5c. I'm going broke with either.

    4. What's one piece of advice you would give to a player looking to improve his game?

Look to find YOUR mistakes. Welcome other's regardless of the result.

    5. Favourite Film? (let's not have it all poker related)

To whittle this down to 100 would be hard but 1? Based on repeated watches I'm going to have to give 2. Dead Man's Shoes and True Romance.

    6. Favourite Poker Player?

    By a mile. Luke Schwartz.

    7. Proudest moment in your poker playing life?

26hr drunken session playing Rush Poker and making £1.2k. Was nice. Sky, and it's players, have profited since.

    1. Tell us a bit about yourself...

Real Name Pete, 48 Married with a beautiful wife and an equally beautiful 9 year old daughter.  Grew up in Australia, lived and worked for a long time in England.  Moved back to Scotland about 10 years ago.

    2. How did you get started with poker?

Friend mentioned it at work, so we had a game after a meeting one day.  BOOM that was me hooked.  Had seen the Poker on SKY Sports,  Signed up and the rest is history

    3. Favourite starting hand?

Don’t really have a favourite starting hand, but I NEVER, EVER play A 9 unless I’m in the BB and it gets around to me without a raise.  Even then, I’d fold to a min raise even if I flopped a set of Aces,  Guy would have me out kicked

    4. What's one piece of advice you would give to a player looking to improve his game?

Always think a few moved ahead, like in chess.  For example you raise it up 3x, then someone re-raises you.  You should already know what you are going to do, before you put the 3x bet in.  Think out all the possible outcomes of your action and have a plan to deal with them

    5. Favourite Film? (let's not have it all poker related)

This is a very strange choice, particularly as I love films, in particular SCi Fi.  But my favourite film is a French film, called “Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis” It is a French comedy and without question one of the funniest films I have ever seen.  I doubt anyone on here has ever watched it.  Except maybe James Hartigan.  You seen it James?

Dam I was determined to keep it to one film…..  But I cant.  Funnily enough this is also another foreign film.  “Life is Beautiful”  If you ever watch it, Please, please show it the proper respect and watch it in Italian with the subtitles on.  The lead actor Roberto Benigni, who also directed the film I believe.  Is a genius. The scene where he pretends he can speak German to translate the information from the nazi’s so his son doesn’t know what’s going is comic genius

Mmmmmm  May have overdone the Film bit….  Just skip this bit if you want… oops too late ;o)

    6. Favourite Poker Player?

Daniel Negranu, not just for his 4 WSOP wins, but more for the way he has re-invented his game.   Unlike some of the older players, who haven’t adapted to the younger, more aggressive way the game is played today

    7. Proudest moment in your poker playing life?

Without Question it was being privileged enough to be a guest presenter on Sky Poker.  I felt I was more the Richard Orford type presenter rather than the Redmond Lee, Carlo Citrone type.  Don’t have a scoobie about Poker compared to these guys, but hopefully I made people laugh

    1. Tell us a bit about yourself...

My name is Ian, 24 years old and I am a games programmer by day. Always been fascinated by games and they have always been a huge part of my life so games programming was always something I wanted to pursue and have managed to suceed and break into the industry. I am enganged and due to be married this april!

    2. How did you get started with poker?

I started a couple of years ago after seeing a few people play on full tilt here and there and seen it advertised. I deposited a $20 and played for a week on and off sucking and losing.

Then a few months later we had a couple of home games which made me want to have a stab online again. I went to pokerstrategy.com and started learning the basics and how to win and have been addicted since.

I have played online on a few site's online and managed to build a few hundred usd a few times and then either cashing it out or donking it up where I don't belong and losing it. Been playing on and off in spurts like this for the last 2 years and then decided this time to try and actually build a roll and not start playing where I shouldn't!

    3. Favourite starting hand?

Aside from the obvious I like small pairs 22-66. They are very well disguised when you flop and you can get paid off epic on low flops by TT+. They are also very easy to throw when you miss unlike 77-TT.

    4. What's one piece of advice you would give to a player looking to improve his game?

Bet your draws, rarely check call. Simple reason is when you hit it's less obvious and you can bluff when you don't. You also generate folds before the river whih is always good.

    5. Favourite Film? (let's not have it all poker related)

Hard question, I have to many!

    6. Favourite Poker Player?

Daniel "Jungleman" Cates, guy is a HU god!
Tom Dwan, totally fearless and got to love that constant clueless expression.
Phil Hellmuth, rock solid old school player and always entertaining.

    7. Proudest moment in your poker playing life?

I don't have one yet as I don't feel I have any significant accomplishments =(. Completing my £15-£1500 challenge and not screwing up will be it when I finish!
