Live poker allowed chat.

Hi, my live poker play is limited and I have a few questions about allowed chat at the table.

1) Lets say I have pocket Jacks. If the flop is 23Q and I am against one opponent who bets after the flop. Am I allowed to say if I want, "I have pocket Jacks" or even lie and say, "I have AQ" to see their reaction?

2) Also if they are all in and I am the only player left in, is the above still true? Or am I not allowed to say or lie about what my hand is.

3) If I'm NOT allowed to state my hand strength, can I say things like, "I'm not sure whether to call, I can't beat, AK!"

4) Can I probe for information, like say, "Did you just hit your Queen there?"

Are all/some of the above questions allowed and considered part of the game, or are any of them against the rules?

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Graham (STAYORGO)

You can do everything you've said above, you can basically say whatever you want if it's between you and another player. You can use speechplay to make it sound like you have a stronger hand than you do, or a weaker hand than you do, or to find out how strong you think their hand is. But I'd stay out of it if you're not in the hand, like if you folded pre-flop and the flop comes 88K don't say '**** I folded an 8' lol. You shouldn't be affecting other people's hands like that. But otherwise it's all good.

Assuming you aint playing in Vegas that is, I think Vegas/WSOP is the only place they've ruled out talking like that at the table

normally i find the less you say the better. being new to live poker you will probably be giving more information away than you receive. light conversation is best. something i was always told "god gave you 2 ears and 1 mouth, use them at that %" in other words talk less and listen more!!!! gl  phil

NO you cant say you have pk Js if you have pk Js at least not in my casino. Ive seen this happen before and after the hand went to show down and player showed he had hand he had said they voided it and other player got the winnings. But casino i play at are funny about everything, it could be differnt elsewhere. As pod1 said better to say nothing apart from normal banter.

ive never played live so this probably means nothing but it comes across as bad etiquette some of the things the op suggests

Well yeah that's true what Pod says. Although if it's a river bet from them and it's just call or fold, so it doesn't even matter if you tell them your hand, feel free to say something to try and pick up on a reaction. The key is, and I know this sounds obvious and easier said than done, but literally you need to completely ignore the actual words that come out of their mouth, I don't mean that just because they might be lying, because sometimes they will be telling the truth, but determining that is 100% down to how they say it. If you can discretely do it, sunglasses/hands over face, your brain will interpret whether someones lying or not much better if you can't see them and can only hear them.

It's definitly not bad etiquette, you're more than welcome to ignore it, in fact if anyone ever asks you anything, I would 100% suggest you do just ignore them because you're more likely to give something away than trick them, but it's all perfectly fine in terms of manners.

Bad etiquette would be, as I said, saying '**** I folded an 8' when the flop comes 88K, because that is affecting other people's game unfairly.

That is completely mental lol. I'd be worried about playing in that casino.

Say what you like at the table while your in play, even some arrogance is generally considered acceptable. While your not in the hand though it's frowned upon to comment on anything potentially revealing and better to keep quiet.

Revealing your cards directly or indirectly is a big no no while people are still in play and you are not. If your in play you can say you have xx cards whether it's true or not.

I've played an MTT at a casino in Southampton where a player announced his hand and he lost the pot because he made a false declaration to mislead.
Whether it's uniform or not different house rules apply and you should always ask before you play IMO

Pretty sure different casinos and different tournaments have their own rules. So you would need to ask what's ok first.

Ok yeah, that's a fair statement. You should probably ask before hand, rather than lose a big pot finding out. But generally speaking it should be ok, but yeah check
