Hi Guys,

Just a quick update, had my second session on Wednesday..  The Blog will be put up this weekend.  But thought I'd post up this taster.

We disscused a great many things, but one thing I was made aware of was the amount of missed opportunities.  Mainly through not being focused enough on what was happening at the tables.

Since Wednesday night I have played 4 DYM's  1 x £11 2 x £5.50 and 1 x £2.25.  I have managed to cash in all 4 of them.

Nothing to get excited about there, I hear you say.  True, True.  However when you consider I managed this without the DISTRACTION of being able to see my cards. It becomes a little more interesting.  Yup covered the screen over my cards with a postit.

Anyway more of this in my Blog.

GL on the tables

Jock.

N.B.  From this point on if you meet me on a DYM...  no postit notes OK ;o)

I've done something similar with a postit when i've been short stacked in a game, but have never had the nerve to try playing an entire game like that. Well done on managing to cash in all 4 games where you have played blind.

    Completely disagree with this.

Heard the whole "DYMs aren't poker!!!111111111oneone1111elevenone111!!!!!" thing before, and it's a load of rubbish. You get 2 hole cards and a load of chips, so it's still poker as far as I'm concerned.

Dyms are a form of poker which requires a different skill set to other games

HU Hyper Sngs are another form of poker which requires a different skill set to other games

Some people believe there is no skill in either format, which is nonsense imo

I can comfortably beat dyms, but not Hypers (yet) I know of other players on the site (much better than me) and they lose a lot at dyms yet crush HU sngs.

I only know of one player who can comfortably crush both diciplines.

I dont get the "dyms are not poker" argument... a lot of the cash regs wouldnt be seen playing dyms because they believe there is little skill involved... But, there clearly is... you just have to look at the ROI's on scope of some of the best DYM players on this site and compare it to some of the average recreational dym grinders to see the skill edge demonstrated. Dyms also offer excellent cash for points.  I find them very hard to grind personally because they are boring, but "needs must" sometimes!

The "post it" thing with the cards is a great idea and i might try it myself in the latter stages of a small mtt just as an experiment.

I am enjoying your blogs Pete and the best of luck with your learning. Have fun.

lol, i tried the post it notes thing. Its fun and it does teach you alot if you perservere with it. I dont win at dym's even when i can see the hole cards but it was a good exercise on squeeze plays and looking for patterns in others bet sizes and stuff.

    Looking forward to your blog.

    Hi Quietman,

Yes the arguments regarding DYM's has been raised many times on this forum.  But lets look at what I was trying to achieve.

    1.  Use the opportunity to perfect note taking whilst playing several players at once

    2.  Play a game that would allow me to play without seeing my cards and give me  a quick result on how I perfomed.

    3.  Play games that would not be too hurtful to my BR if the learning process was a costly one

    4.  Allow me to play different levels of buy in

    5.  Allow me to be playing the same players to the end so I would be able to react to their style of play without being moved tables

When you tot up all of the above DYM's seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

Hopefully that explains how I was able to use the DYM Structure to achieve the goals I had set myself.

For me the DYM is a great way to develop my poker skills, in this case.  Currently i am also playing a great deal of HU SNG.

Opps this is turning into my Blog.  Lets just leave it there ;o)

    GL on the tables everyone

    Jock

thanks for the reply Jock and I agree with your reasoning for playing these games, as I said it was only my opinion of DYMs and (hopefully) not a criticism.
If you are playing in MTTs and you are quite happy to beat only half the field then that is fine. Playing a 6 seat DYM is totally different to playing even a 6 seat SnG and requires a different mindset. I don't agree with that ' its not proper poker ' thing cos it is poker its just that you are only playing to beat half the field.
If you play a normal 6 seat SnG and finish 3rd you get nothing. Also there tends to be a lot of sit outs in these games which gives a totally different dynamic to the table as people play differently again as there is always dead money in the pot.
Anyways, good luck at the tables and looking forward to the blog.

You were asking for screen names suggestions a while ago Jock. After that effort maybe you should go with Annette_48.

Shove or fold poker is great when you can't see your hole cards

It's a great learning tool, specially when you consider you can have as much as 40% equity - shows up how close match ups are

    good luck

Are you surprised how much you didn't know about the game ?
Or on the flip how much your actually learning about the game ?

'Nothing exciting I hear you say.'  Well until you wrote about that postage note part lol.  I nearly got out of my chair (I'm too old though, literally).  Very cool, but I have to ask what is your end game or is that the blog end story?  I know, or think that your coaching isn't part of a DYM plan so what is?  Look forward to hearing it in later blogs.  I'm guessing position and the ability to uncover the strength of an opponents hand or level.  Ether way I hope I'll learn a bit from your conclusion.  Hurrr in my day it was all in  all fold :).
      All the best Jock x
