Nasty donk, but suspect this is a prime example of what happens when you play too passively in position.

Why would you push people off with the best hand ?

charge them - get value - you don't want them to fold

Both you and gran have recommended shoving pre?

But you'd be putting your whole tourney on the line with a marginal hand, just to pick up a few hundred chips from the blinds?

    What am I missing here?

The problem is that we only have 13BB in this hand. Any raise is going to be at least 800 out of our 5200 and, if called, we'll be forced to play a marginal hand, possibly out of position with a significant proportion of our stack in the middle. If we shove, we can frequently add 1.5BB to our stack and if called we'll have at least 30% equity in the hand (except against AA). We're unlikely to be called by worse than our AT but we could be called by underpairs which we are roughly 50/50 against... and since we're so short a race isn't the worst thing in the world for us.

The alternatives are to fold or limp. Limping gives us no chance of ever winning the pot before the flop, gives our opponents the chance to push us out of the hand, perhaps with worse, by making a raise that we can't call and the best potential result will be that we might get the chance to see a flop with a hand that will only hit 2/3 times. So limping is a poor alternative.

The fold is not awful, due to being in early position, but with this stack we have to make a move sometime and we can't simply expect to get a better hand than AT. If we wait too long we might end up in the position of making our shove, getting our double-up and still only having 13BB.

When making this shove we don't really want to be called but it's important to pay the rent so we don't get blinded down while we wait for our double-up. If we are called, we can live with it.

deffo raise preflop bet 3/4 pot bet on flop and same on turn and shove on river played both hands to weak need to play more aggro dnt be scared what they have just play your hand

No offence Donk, but is pretty awful advice. The majority of players at 4NL are so bad because that's all they do, 'oh I've got 2pr so that's a good hand so just keep betting/calling'. You need be thinking about your opponent has.

Please bear in mind the players on the table in both hands were hyper-aggresive psycho's who were shoving every other hand and re-buying. This will always either be very profitable or very expensive, i am always going to try and hit a flop before calling the inevitable shove. Not gonna play bingo with some guy who shoves pre twice with 3-6suited and wins both times.

Rancid i think this is a classic case of what can happen if you try for the most profit. Some nutter will call you all the way with a gutshot and hit on the river because you didnt push him off. Always gonna be that balancing act between profit and risk.

Starting to think its better to win a little pot than lose a big pot.
