Heads Up Cash or Heads Up Sit 'n' G?

edited July 2012 in Poker Chat
Hi folks,

I like to play heads up and want to make it one of my specialist areas.

I'd really like to learn HU cash but the rake seems very high at the micros to the point where the money just seems to disappear after you've played the same person for a while.

I plan to play standard HUSNG i.e. not turbos, until I've built up skill and a roll to play HU cash.

Is this a good plan? i.e. are the skills transferrable or is cash play big difference. Would I be better investing some funds to  fcus on HU cash?

Considering the rake would it just make more sense to stick with HUSNG long term or does the rake become less relevant as you move up the levels?

Also does anyone have a BR managment strategy for HU cash? How many buy ins etc.

Cheers and thanks for any advice,
Doug

I play alot of HU SnGs and I'd say the skillsets required are very different (HU cash is alot more skillful).

Personally I play Hypers, but did used to play Turbos, either way, it will often come down to a good knowledge of what range you should be shoving with and what range you should be calling with because you'll often be somewhere between 10BB and 30BB deep, so not a huge amount of room for play.

In HU cash, you will ALWAYS be sat with at least 100BB (unless you're mad) so there's alot more skill in it and alot less chance of just getting it all in pre alot.

However, yaeh the rake at HU micro cash is pretty sick, so if you both sit with £4 @ 2p/4p, and you stack him after a while of playing, you'll probably be lucky to end up with £6.

Playing HU SnGs will definitely still improve your HU game though, and it will improve aspects of your MTT game too; it gives you a chance to try out times when you think you can just float the flop, cos the opponent c-bets 100% and then take it away from him on the turn etc. gives you LOTS of practice at getting a feel for board textures and putting your opponent on a hand. Also, once you've played 1000 hypers, you should have built up the ability to take a horrible outdraw and just shrug it off, cos it will happen tons and there's nothing you can do about it.

I wouldn't know what a good BR strategy is for HU cash because I don't really play, but I'd imagine you'd want a pretty hefty amount of BIs to feel secure, 40 BIs maybe at low stakes?

As for HU SnGs, if you're playing Turbos at low stakes and you're good, I think 30 BIs is plenty

Hypers, probably somewhere between 30 and 50 BIs

Thanks for the response much appreciated.

Yes you're right, my MTT game has definitely improved since playing more heads up.

I think it's partly because of the increased volume of hands, plus it makes you become a lot more aggressive, and also find good spots to bluff because a lot of the time your hand is no good :-)

The main motivation for me playing any format is to improve my overall game, I think heads up does this.

Also people on sky and various other places keep saying cash play improves your overall game the most which is what draws me to Heads up Cash.

The rake is a bit irritating and 40 buy ins even at 2p/4p is a slightly above my roll at the moment s I might mix it up a bit and play some HUSNG and some HUC. This is also compounded by the fact it's often harder to get a Heads Cash game plus you get people sitting out on you for ages at a time in HUC which limits the amount you can play.

I'll keep playing MTTs too as they're so much fun and hopefully the heads up play will continue to improve things roof me there.

    Cheers,
    Doug
