Best way to play the final 2 tables when chip leader

I just finished playing the £22 3pm bounty hunter... there were only roughly 30runners and i found myself in the top 3-4 from the early stages, when it got down to the final 2 tables i was chip leader at 12,000 chips when the average was around 5k-6k and normally in this position i would target the short stacks and play agressive, but i hadnt won any tournament lately that way so i decided i would play tight and only raise hands that i was prepared to go all in with, it worked and i won the tournament im just wondering if anyone else finds it best playing tight late on? or was i just lucky and should have maybe played more agressive??? would be open to anyones opinion on it.

thanks jordz

    As lambert says it depends.

If opponents are Passive id be raising most hands folding to 3bets unless i have it. They wont ever 3bet enough to stop us from making a profit, and obviously they can 3bet us when we have a genuine hand.

If our opponents are LAG then i'd play tighter opening in posision, might 4bet light given the right situations.

If our opponents are TAG id treat more like the passive line.

play the opposite way the table is playing
    play position
play in pots with the players that are weak or you feel you have an edge on
avoid the biggest stack closest to you unless you a very strong hand

they are some more but hope this helps

    well done taking it down.
