First foray into live Poker - Big Bluff Poker Club

Ok, there is a private club near me where they play live cash from nl50 upwards, deepstack MTTs every night, backgammon, chess etc. Its called the Big Bluff poker club in palmers green, has anyone heard of this place?

From the reviews, it sounds like its full of regs who are good players. Having grown up in the area, I know a lot of the types of players who will frequent this club will be degenerates and play quite a lose style.

Given I have never played live poker before is it really a good idea to go somewhere full of regs who on the face of it sound quite agg, given that I will be quite out of my comfort zone initially handling the chips, making sure I act in position and keeping a straight poker face!

I am happy to take four buyins with me at nl50. Do any of the live regular players have any thoughts on this. It seems a well run place.

I've never been but heard the action there is pretty wild.

Most live poker places are of poor standard.  Even tho there are 'regs' it doesn't mean they are good.

Even tho the blinds may be 25/50p, in live poker it is very uncommon to sit with only 100bb.  You may be able to BI for 100 or even 200£ in total.

You'll be fine.  Just explain that you are new and most people are nice.  Just be careful with any comments that you may say to rub people up the wrong way.

Thanks ryan, max buyin at nl50 is 100bb.

As for rubbing up the locals the wrong way as I said I was brought up in the area and went to school there so wont be surprised if I bump into a few familar faces. But as you say it makes sense to keep a low profile.

Acegooner - Id suggest taking a trip to the Genting club in Westcliff, Southend if you fancied trying out the live scene.

MTT's run every night from 8pm and there is always at least 1, normally 2, cash games going on, normally from about 9.30pm till 4am. Nothing more than 1/2, normally .5/1 or 1/1. Tues, Fri, Sat and Sun are the best nights for MTT's and cash - nothing more than a £50 buy-in and it'll be much friendly than BBPC IMO!

Cheers kev, only prob with southend is its a three hour round trip from north london. Palmers Green is like 20 minutes away and the reason I want to play live is to get away from the boring grind of on line poker.

    HI Acegooner

This is my first post on the forum but i thought i would reply to this as i have played here several times.

I feel the tournaments their are quite good and well structured but i personally feel that the cash their is very tough to play.

I may be wrong but the times i have played it feels like you have 3 or 4 people colluding together to beat you. Their is a large amount of regulars and i certainly feel like you are playing against a group rather than individuals which can be very tough to do.

Anyway, just my point of view but hope this helps.

That kinda puts me off to be honest. I know the regs speak in their native mother tongue (lots of greeks, turks and polish in the area) and if im on a cash table and everyone is not speaking english then I have an issue with that. It was highlighted in another review i found but I was willing to give it a try.

It may be worth it going to aspers in stratford instead or another local club.

Do you have any suggestions? I live in enfield.

    Thanks again.

Aspers is a licensed casino, is a lovely venue, spreads a lot of 1/1 and whenever I've been there they are very very strict on English only at the table.

Would probably be the best venue when all things are considered.

Thanks ryan again, I see aspers have tutorials for new players which is ideal. You certainly earnt your crust last night, assigning ranges to some of that play was hard work!

WHAATTTTT. I was speaking to a guy at a casino in Edinburgh at a table and i used the word "naw" i answer to his question. "naw" just being slang for no! i was hammered down on, i might has well have spoke chinesse for the row i was given.

Suprised to still see clubs accepting non-english language on the tables.

Edit: Just realised i worded abit of this terrible. Sorted now.

If you wanna play cash Stratford is the best place to play - apparently the standard is pretty weak but the MTT's are pretty bad and dont get many runners but with the olympics around the corner, it may be tricky to get / numbers may dwell over the next month.

Point taken re: travelling ... I'd suggest The Western Club if not, as that has a good mix of MTT's and cash, has PM and Evening MTT's and friendly place to play.

I live in Enfield too and i agree with the above that Aspers in Stratford is a good place to play cash but does take a while to get there. I have only been there 3 times but enjoyed it each time. I also go to Grosvenor casino in Luton sometimes and you can get their in just under 30 mins and they run some tournaments as well as plenty of cash games later in the evening that are much more friendly than the Big Bluff.

There are a couple of pubs around Enfield that run some poker, normally with a rebuy tournament 1st with about 20 runners followed buy a 1/2 cash game after. The standard is pretty shocking and you will get some unbelievable calls that give you some shocking beats, but in general they are quite good fun and pretty easy to make a few quid from if you can handle the bad beats.

    Hi mate.

Ive played at Big Bluff quite a bit recently after a few mates suggested checking out the place a few months ago for a mid-week comp. Its only been open about a year (I think)...bit of a dive but the comps are pretty good espcially the Fri/Sat comps with pretty good guarantees compared to other places like Fox etc. The standard of play is pretty bad...lots of limping, raise/folding from 8bb stacks, raising 20x with AA or KK in un-opened pots etc.  A few good regs about, couple i noticed from the international but defo worth getting involved.

Regarding cash its not that soft but if your looking for a place where you can go and have them throwing money at you and not worry about the type of people about, Hippodrome (just opened in Leicester Square, literally outside the station)or as others have suggested Aspers would be your best bet. Popping down on Fri/Sat nights from about 10pm is something me and a few mates often do and the amount of drunk people throwing away their money is shocking. The play in general is bad, tons of value and definatley worth making the trip. The games normally go until 8-9am until tables start to break making it perfect to get the tube back in the morning but if your driving the car parks are closed atm so you will have to park across the road at the multi storey car park, about a 5 minitue walk from the casino.

    Hope this helps and gl.

Forgot to say most of the tables will be 1/1 but depending on what night it is they will have 1 or 2 1/2 tables going and if your a PLO fan 1/1 and 1/2 games get going most weekends.

Thanks for the heads up. Unusually for a poker player I like sleeping so probably wouldnt be playing much later than midnight with work commitments etc. If I do plan on a night out however, certainly after kicking out time it could be a good place to chill and make a few bob, I dont drink half as much as I used to and if I knew I was playing poker I would make sure im teetotal.

I suspect you are on the other side of enfield to me en1/en2? I live in enfield lock and the local train station serves stratford. I can go door to door in pretty much 30 mins, and the casino is within throwing distance of the station.

And I like the fact that they have tutorials on the etiquette of live play, there must be a huge army of on line players who havent yet played live that they can tap into.

I actually think the olympics will be good for the casino, more footfall means more potential fish (unless that fish is me !).
