Opportunity's in Vegas

I used to be a regaular at sky poker, and wa sknown by a few withing the community. That was until work ground me down and being a serving member of the royal air force i spent a lot of time in sandy desert conditions. However i am now back and fresh...... at least for a little time anyways.

This leads me onto the topic i am here to discuss, and as you can see by the title, it involves Sin City.

I feel now is an appropriate time, especially with the conclusion of the WSOP to ask a few questions on here, as i know many will be willing to help, as always with the sky poker community. Luckily i have managed to get a 6 month career break from the RAF and i intend to travel to Vegas on a work/travel permit. I just have a few questions i could do with answering from somebody who has been there.

1) What is the likelyhood i will find work as a poker dealer or a barman out there?
2) What is the standard/Cost of living like?
3) How easy would it be to find a play to stay for cheap?
4) Is there anything else i should consider before moving there for a prolonged amount of time?

I appreciate you guys reading this and hopefully getting back to me!

Thanks,

Mick

    Hi Mick.

"...1) What is the likelyhood i will find work as a poker dealer or a barman out there?...."

Don't even think about it Mick, unless you intend to do it illegally - & you must NOT do that, the consequences are dire if you get caught.

You will need a Visa, & the USA equivelant of a Work Permit, which could take you the best part of a year to secure. If you are truthful on the application - & you should be - you just won't get the Visa.

There is severe unemployment in Vegas, & they quite reasonably want to preserve jobs for Vegas residents.

Having just returned from Las Vegas i definately reccomend taking a shot and go for it having been twice Las Vegas is my most favourite place in the world. I myself will be going to vegas next may for 3 months during the world series of poker.  However as tikay has mentioned i feel it will be difficult for you to find work while you are out there.  I dont know what standard of poker player you are having never seen you play before but at the cash games in vegas there is definately money to be made.  The standard of play on a 1/3 or 2/5 cash game could be compared to 5p/10p in sky the games are really soft.  With regards to living expenses as long as you are not eating in casino restauraunts food is extremely cheap.  For cheap accomadation on the strip the Riviera and Circus circus are the cheapest but are a little bit out of the way on the other end of the strip.  So i would reccomend going more central and staying somewhere like the imperial palace.  If you are playing poker and using your rewards card while playing they will give you money of your room and will be able to get some free nights this way.  Best of luck.

Please be aware that the longest you can stay in the US (without going through the hassle of applying to the US Embassy for a visa) is three months.

I know several people who "overstayed their welcome" and now find it next to impossible to get back into America!

Just to clarify - I am talking about a non-immigrant tourist visa. This would NOT give you the right to work in the US.

It's also not cheap and not that easy to obtain (i.e. the US authorities will be suspicious about WHY you want to spend longer than three months in the country).

    Basically, yes.

As tikay already stated, obtaining a work permit is a long and difficult process. And they're NEVER going to issue one to someone looking for bar work!

    Hi Mick
I would recommend treating it as basically a 3 month holiday and if you have the discipline play purely 1/2 or 1/3 cash games the 1/2 cash at the venetian is very soft and any competent player should make a decent profit also if you are grinding it out there then you will make enough comps on your players card to pay for a fair bit of your food bill 3 months is a long time in vegas and if alone and running bad can be believe it or not a lonely place and once the initial vegas buzz wears off can get a bit boring so motivation could then become a problem.
You could probably get a really good deal for a 3 month stay at the imperial palace and its perfectly located although cheaper deals could probably be found off strip but then you will have taxi expenses as you probably wont want to walk back to off strip digs especially late at night.
It all depends on your personality and requirements for entertainment vegas can be done really cheaply or you can really quickly leak money away hope that helps I also posted a blog on here last year that has a lot vegas info on it
