First live Tournament

Very new to poker , been playing online now for about 8 weeks mostly playing the 0.60p DYM .. Also been out and bought quite a few books and try to watch as much on the tv as poss.....

Would really like to try a live event but it seams very daunting to a newbie , My closest place is DtD in Nottingham . I popped over one Sunday night and signed up for a membership and had a look round but didn't have a clue what to do there so went on the blackjack table instead ( lost lots of money )

I hear that the SPT are very newbie friendly and that there is one at DTD in SEPT. I think this will be the weekend to crack my live poker virgin cherry. I hear them mention side events on the sky poker tv .. What will there be for a newbie like me there ?

Any help would be great

Jamie

Hi Limmy come to DTD on Friday 8th Sept for the 50 pound turboment starting at 8pm... Or the Saturday one or the sunday one... think they are all at 8.. as your local u might get the bug and play all three!

When u arrive introduce yourself to anyone u recognise off the tele like tikay or ryan who be there and they will introduce u to others.

Theres bound be at least one sky reg on ur table to help u out and u can be sure of a fun atmosphere.

If in doubt, find Giant811 he is 19 foot tall and unmissable!

    Hi Jamie

I've copied this from the Sky Poker Tour section of the forum, hope it helps.

    Side events confirmed as follows

    Friday night 8pm Super 50 Turbo £50+6

    £5,000 GTD 10,000 chips, 20 minute clock

    Saturday 8pm XXL £30 NLHE Freezeout £30+5

    £1,000 GTD 10,000 chips 20 minute clock

    Sunday 3pm Super 50 £50+6

    £5,000 GTD 10,000 chips 30 minute clock

Pay on the day for all
    SPT Leaderboard points for all

Added value of SPT Online MTT seats to the top three finishers in each

Played my first live event last year and now go to as many SPT events as I possibly can.  I'm going to be there for the Friday night game and I imagine quite a few of the Sky players will be there too, using the £50 game as a warm up for the main event.

Not sure about the Friday night, but on the Saturday I imagine there will also be a few sit & goes organised by some of the Sky players.

Yes will deffo be coming to the Friday and Saturday one , Its so easy online as its all done at the click of a button , when other players call al raise do they have to say what amount they are calling or raising , also is it up yo you to keep a check on how much is in the pot or does the dealler say how much is in the pot. Also is it hard to tell what other players have in there stacks?

I will also have to get out of the habbit of smiling when i have a good hand lol

Cheers all for your help so far

     1. when other players call al raise do they have to say what amount they are calling or raising ? The short answer is NO.  But it's best to get into the habit to say "i call" and "i raise" as it avoids confusion. There is no need to announce how much u are calling as it is obvious. But when raising i think its best to say i raise to X (amount) But you dont have to.

    2. also is it up yo you to keep a check on how much is in the pot or does the dealler say how much is in the pot.  The short answer is YES. But you can ask the dealer to spread the pot so u can count it.  In Pot Limit games i think u can ask the dealer how much the pot is, but this will highlight to the rest of the table that you are not paying attention.

    3. Also is it hard to tell what other players have in there stacks? It can be a litte tricky but its a good idea to get a rough idea of what everyone is playing. People should keep their big chips visable but if a stack is hard to see properly dont be afraid to ask the dealer for a count.

"I will also have to get out of the habbit of smiling when i have a good hand lol " Dont worry about it... just do what i do and talk nonsense the whole time :)

Another one that I fell foul of when I first started playing is to scream.  "FOLD, FOR GOD SAKE FOLD"  when you're bluffing.

Fine on  line but a bit of a tell in live games  ;o)

Jimmy, come to the SPT you will have a blast.  If you hear a loudmouth Scot. It'll probably be me... or more likely Mewillows.  Come and say hi

    Hope to see you there

    Cheers
