evening all, going to vegas in december. first anybody know what the weather is like that time of year. second is it right if your playing cash, at a dealer dealt table, its usual to tip the dealer. if so is it after every hand you win, (not likely in my case) or when you stand many thanks

Weather? Its the dessert so should be okay, 

Tipping? Its america try to tip everyone except the ppl in mcdonalds they just put your money in the chairty jar in front of you... seriously tho... dont tip in mcdonalds... the rest of them make such low money that tipping puts them up to a decent wage so take lots of ones!!

RE Cash I would prob tip eveytime i scoop a big pot, say 50bb+... depends on the dealer how much i tip.  If they've done well and kept a good vibe on the table and kept the game flowing quickly i dont hate tipping.  Just remember its part of their wage thats all.

I lived in America in Florida for a year from August 2010 until September 2011 working in Walt Disney World so i know quite a bit about the tipping procedures in America.  Unless its a split pot you will be expected to tip $1 for even a $10 pot.  I tip $2 for a $20-50 pot, $3 for a $50-$70 pot and $5 for a $70-$100 pot use this as a general guideline.  You dont generally tip the dealer when you stand its expected you tip when you win the pot.

You do not need to tip in Mcdonalds as these employees are on $8 an hour compared to a server in any restauraunt in America is on $3 an hour from the company which only covers the employees tax.  You should tip any server 20% minimum of the bill anything less and they will be offended i know having worked in the food industry in America.  The culture and the way of tipping is completely different to what you will be used to in the UK.   

Make sure you play some cash in Ceasars Palace they keep the free drinks coming every 10 minutes and thats any drink you want i was on the pina coladas!  Just make sure you tip the cocktail waitress $1 each time and she will keep coing back to you.

Enjoy your trip to Vegas you will have a blast.  I would go back and live in America again tomorrow if only online poker was legal!

Also google the "20 doller trick" for a nice room upgrade.. it worked a treat for me.

And dont get the tunnel if you get a taxi from airport to hotel. 

Also when your drunk, taxi drivers will try to shortchange you EVERY time if you appear to be drunk imo.. maybe its just me.. but i caught a couple of them out which was lol. 

oh and if you want booze for your hotel... buy it from the gold coast or orleans hotel booze shops... with a player card you'll get a 10% discount. You can get rdic size bottles of JD for lol monies.

hi mate weather in december is generally t shirt during the day but can get pretty cold at night and also some casinos can be a bit chilly due to the air con but they generally turn it up in the evening to keep u in the casino so recommend taking a light jacket or hoodie with you when you leave your room even if its warm as you might not be back to your room till well late lol
As for tipping then eg if you are playing 1/2 then a buck for a medium pot say 20 to 100 dollars and if you are lucky and get a big pot 300 upwards then 5 bucks is the norm its about finding a balance dont overtip as this can have a big impact on your results as rake can be high

Hi epwb, Im off to vegas in december too, where you staying? Im staying at the MGM from the 15th till 21st.

Like people have said i think the weather is ok during the day about 14 degrees but does get a lot colder in the night.

Ive heard about the $20 room thing but does it actually work?

when  I was in vegas in june I just tipped $1 every pot I won but when I stacked some1 I gave dealer $5 or $10 dollar depending how nice dealer was lol that was only on $1/$2 game though but yeah hae fun its awesome.

Think this is way way out of line.  You will be killing your win rate with tipping like this.  IMO just 1 dollar for most pots unless its at least a double up then 2 dollar or if its something ridic like a 3k pot then chuck them 5.

Tipping 5$ on a 70$ pot is just unreal.  Can't get my head round it!

& agree with scotty re bearlthers keeness to tip, i guess she must have been some dealer lol,

fwiw i'd tip a buck most times i win a pot, i think it's probably excessive to tip every pot you win but to counter that i'd tip more for big pots,

i guess that's the hardened pro in me, if you tip after every pot you win you'll easily be handing over in excess of $100/week which adds up to a significant amount over a year; if ur just there to enjoy & have a few drinks then sure, tip at will

I read your blog the other week ryan and you mention the $20 room upgrade trick, how do you do this? and does it work?

Ask upon checkin whether any upgrades are available whilst putting $20 on the reception desk, if they say no you've lost nothing if they say yes and take your $20 you've just earned a tonne of $ by being upgraded. Helps to know what the room you have booked is, and what the upgrade options are.

Re tipping dealers, dealers would prefer $1 per pot regardless of size, rather than nothing most pots and a few $5 here and there. You will see a wide range of dealer standards and I personally only properly tip the competent ones, purely because they deal well, keep the game running well and I want them to earn well and keep doing it. The people who clearly cant pay attention, or shuffle/deal properly I have no interest in giving them money because it's polite. I'm more likely to call out a dealer for being incompetent than I am to tip to not look like im tight. Similarly I often tip more in pots that I am not involved in when the dealer has handled a situation really well which most other dealers might have wasted 10-15 minutes on, or if they have treated a player fairly/well in an ususual spot etc. 

The dealer has such a huge effect on the games and the way they play that most people hardly realise.

You can have a 20 minute spell with a quiet old dealer whos making some mistakes blaming the players for those mistakes and generally causing a poor atmosphere at the table. Then on the next push you get a young guy who warmly greets the table, snap shimmies the cards 3 quick riffles, a cut and bam 15 seconds later 9 people have 2 cards and are wasting all our time lool. The dealer than goes on to politely but loudly call the action and focus the attention on whose turn it is. Very often the whole game can change, with more people seeing flops, the whole table chatting discussing with contempt the last dealer and their inability to deal etc. This dealer will get tipped alot more than the last one it's just common sense.

As is the best tips you'll invest in will be room upgrade and tipping valets the first time you get a free drink, $1 a drink is fine, $5 for your first drink and you will be ****-sed in half an hour because they wont leave your side.

I think it depends on two things: 

1) Pot size. You can't be tipping 10% of every pot small pot you win. I tend to tip a dollar every other small pot (by small I mean 12-15BBs), or $2 for every other reasonable pot (something like 25-30BBs). Even if I win an absolute monster, I don't tip more than 5xBBs for the hand, just because all of those tips will end up coming to around a buy-in by the time you end your trip.

2) The service you're getting. I tipped one dealer loads when I played in Vegas last. Why? Because she was incredibly good at her job, efficient and kept the action going. I enjoyed the game 5x more than a normal one just because the game played well, and the dealer took a lot of credit for that. It was good service, so I tipped well. Other times I have had an absolute shocker of a dealer who is happier chatting to the local 'pro', and so the action bumbled along. It was painful. Amount tipped? About $2.

At the end of the day, it's very much up to you. You could always ask Neil Channing and Carlo to discuss the subject too...

Yes might have been a bit over the top but i used to play in an underground game where it was $2sb, $3bb every saturday night when i lived in Orlando and the tipping at the table was very genourous although at this game most of the people had plenty of money eg doctors and and so on.  I do admit the tips wernt probobly as high in vegas as they were in the underground game but tipping is very much expected in America.
