As a relative beginner in poker terms, I would be interested to know of any particular books that sky poker players would recommend reading to build up my understanding of the game and the strategies to improve my play at the tables.  Any suggestions would be appreciated...

    Doyle Brunson- Super system

Phil Gordon - Poker the real deal

Both good starting books, i also believe Matt was involved in a book for beginners called how to play poker and win.

I would recommend Harington on Hold'em or any poker book by John Vorhaus. John's books are really fun and easy to read.

thanks for the suggestions that have been posted. i know there are many many books out there so its handy to see which ones people recommend.  I also agree with bonniedog that practise is the most important element of improving your game, but I figure reading up cannot do any harm when I am unable to sneak the laptop into work for a sneaky game!

    many thanks...

    Buistyboy,

If you want a book that's informative and educational BUT reads like a beach-read thriller, try Gus Hansen's Every Hand Revealed. It's the only poker strategy book I've come across that doesn't read like a text book.

It's Gus's thought-process in every single hand of his victorious 2007 Aussie Millions tournament. It's brutally honest about his faillings and also explains quite logically his more flamboyant moves which to the outside world look like standard Gus 'any two cards' Hansen play.

But mostly, it's fun to read. Even though you know the result, you still find yourself wondering exactly what's going to happen in the next hand, and once you start it, it's very difficult to put down.

    Hi Buistyboy,
For someone starting out on Texas Hold em, rather than looking for books (they can be hard work to begin with) I'd start by reading articles in poker magazine's. If you ever get chance to play LIVE at a local casino to you, they usually have free British Poker magazines there. However if you go to your search engine online type in Card Player and you'll find the American magazine 'Card Player'. Back in the early 90's this was available  at the casino's or in 'Smiths' but alas not now but you'll find most of what you need online.
The best way to learn is by  talking to people   who play , listening  and asking questions about the game.
Over the last year i have been watching the 'SKY TV' online and the Opens   to be honest there is no better way to learn, although you need to remember the Opens are played fast (7 min blinds) and the analyst's are explaining how to get to the winning line in a 3 hour tournament !!!
Strategy is a section in this forum that's worth reading a lot of mixed views and in a forum like this you can find   the answers to any questions you might be thinking !!
