    Day 09

Today I felt I played pretty well, with a few close calls. Just never managed to win one of the big important flips at any of the business ends. One notable AIPF hand, having my KK busted by QQ to finish in 8th in the 20:45 BH. Just shows how a single hand can swing your entire tournament from one extreme to the other.

Another lesson to be learned from today. My aces were busted in a deep stack quite early on (Some numpty calling with Q4 OOP), which left me with 2BBs [80 or so chips I think]. I managed to build that stack to back over 5k and decent position. Whatever your situation is in poker, there's always hope. Just concentrate on playing your A-Game at all times.

    Day 10

The day started in good spirits, ready to play for the whole evening. I've not had a chance to do that for a while. As the night progressed, I became frustrated at a lot of bad and illogical play from others, which seemed to wear off on me. I started to tilt quite a bit and play badly, so I chose not to play the last remaining tournaments.

I blanked the lot. Won a few bounties though. Not quite a minus 100 percentage return on investment this time.

The only positive from today's poker has to be winning last week's MML. I have reserved my place in Thursday's Main as my prize. That is something to look forward to.

Should have just watched the football. Seems both matches were exciting for the neutral.

Time to shut down and refresh. Tomorrow is new day.

    Day 11

After a rather disappointing and unenjoyable day yesterday, today was much better.

I felt I played really well. Not only did I win one, FT another and came close in a few to finish with a daily profit, I also completed a feat I don't think I have ever done after playing numerous games in a day; I was not eliminated in any of the tournaments prior to late registration closing [I only late-regged the first game 10 or so minutes late.]

I'm now just about at peak profit again. That's always pleasing.

This is something you really must work on Dazzy.

Getting uppity & tilty because others play bad & get lucky (as you see it) or you are having a frustrating session is a leak, a really bad leak. You are a winning recreational player - that's the absolute nut spot. So try to remember, before you start each session, every poker player, in every session, is going to take a few beats. It always was & always will be the case. "Venting" is fine (if that's your thing) but I'm not at all convinced it helps. Just gotta learn to suck it up.

On the plus side, if it affects you mentally, quitting the session early - as you did - is exactly correct. Better, though, not to get your head in that space first.

Anyway, well done on your terrific progress, & for your wonderful, selfless offer yesterday whereby you gave away the £3 Main Event seat you won last week. You are a top geezer.

    Good morning, @Tikay10

Thanks for the wise and kind words of encouragement.

I've played online poker for close to 20 years now, and everything you say should be second nature to me by now. I'd say it largely is, but old habits die hard and sometimes - undoubtedly, far more infrequently than ever before - a mid-session 'can't be assed' feeling kicks in.

Up until recently before I started focusing my attention on MTT tournaments (which I had never really done in the past), I'd honestly say that at least 90% of my online poker playing days were spent with that 'can't be assed' attitude not really bothering whether I busted a deposit or not. Playing what I fancied. From playing with good, disciplined intentions, using no more than 1% of BR to chasing big wins using 50%+ of BR at a time. Obviously by using this strategy [probably the type used by many thousands of online poker players] means that, as the saying goes, you win some and you lose some. So I've had plenty of highs and lows, and many 100s of hours, playing and experiencing one of my favourite pastimes. Poker. And that was absolutely fine by me.

However, I think my poker eureka moment, that turned me into that, winning recreational player, definitely has to be the recent switch to playing MTTs. Although it is still possible to play poorly due to getting uppity & tilty, it's much easier to just write-off and give up on a MTT session resulting in less damage to the BR (especially when employing strict or decent BRM) than the old thought process of 'let's load up another SNG [usually of higher buyin] or try get a quick double up at cash'.

Until I prove to myself I can maintain a consistent profit over at least a 6 month period, I will never include the word 'winning' in any description of me. I can still agree with 'recreational player' though.

By playing MTTs I feel I'm now less prone to that worst type of tilt because in my mind, firstly, a MTT takes a long time to complete and secondly, are much more difficult to profit short-term (over a sample of 1 or 2) than it is to win a flip on a cash table or to cash in a DYM or SnG.

Another thing that helps tremendously, is this forum and this thread. It holds me accountable for the times I'm thinking of playing poorly or tilting. It's now not a case of 'it's only me who knows how badly I'm playing, so who cares?', but anyone who reads this thread will know (It's no coincidence that I've never really tilted when playing live poker at the pub or the odd time when at the casino). That's why I was venting somewhat the other night. And of course, to be open & honest with you all and myself. Again, I thank everyone for any contributions to this thread and their support. It really does help.

I'm sorry. I am not having that one bit. All credit must go to you. You are such an asset to Sky and this Forum. It really must be difficult and probably quite tiresome at times to repeatedly find the energy and enthusiasm to research all those 'Who Won What' threads, find and post relevant material, host forum comps and offer all manners of general issues players have... each and every single day. My small token gesture is incomparable to all that you do!

I realise I've waffled here quite a bit. Sorry. That's another old habit.

Was hoping to play a little more tonight, but it seemed the cards weren't being too kind. So cut the session short. I only managed a meagre 2 bounties, and blanked the others completely. Couldn't even muster up any deepish runs.

Nevermind, those are the breaks and must be expected at times.

Didn't play over the weekend, And today was another day to forget.

Being dealt AA two hands in a row, and losing both. Flopping a straight flush and not getting a single extra chip. Losing a huge AIPF AK vs AQ. That was some of the excitement from the first hour or so.

From then on, not a lot else happened. I blanked the lot, only picking up one bounty in the Mini.

I used my weekly £2.30 rewards ticket towards the Mini entry.

    Tomorrow is another day.

I didn't play yesterday and I forgot to update after my last session on Tuesday. It was another miserable outing. After busting in most of my tourneys early, I decided to stop poker for the night and watch the Italy/Spain match instead. It turned out to be a fairly exciting match.

Going to start my session for tonight shortly, hopefully we can see a profitable day. The last few sessions have really been sluggish.

Much better session. Although quite lucky with the big AIPF hands against @spearsy136 HU, I managed to win the 21:00 F/O. Honourable mention to @aynaricol for getting 3rd also. Go TEAM-MML :D

Just couldn't convert the other couple of FTs and deep runs. But overall, back to winning ways. So can't complain in the slightest.

Typical that when you start to run a bit better you have other plans and won't be able to play much over the coming days. Sod's Law, that is. Finishing on peak profit is something to be happy about though.

One other little thing I'd like to say. As we all know with the well-documented glitches etc, I'm fortunate that usually I have very little problems when playing, barring the odd crash here and there, that a client restart resolves. Last night however, when getting moved tables in one of the tournaments, the table just froze. And I didn't realise until the next break when I generally restart the client. I was left with 70 chips when the blinds were 300/600. That was no good, even though I some how did manage to build that stack back to 8k ish,

I went onto live chat this morning in which I got a goodwill refund (£5.50) for that tournament. Fortunately, in the past I've never needed to contact Sky for a refund but credit where credit it due, Sky were very fair on this occasion.

If you could, @Tikay10 . Could you please pass on my gratitude to 'Brooke G'? She was very helpful. The little survey/feedback thing didn't load after my chat session so couldn't pass on my thoughts. Thank you

    @thedazzman

I'll most certainly pass on your comments to Brooke G in Customer Care.

CC must be one of the most thankless jobs ever. Frustrated poker players are not renowned for tolerance or patience, & they can be pretty mean when irked. CC staff get so much unjust criticism & it's a one-sided battle, they are not allowed to respond in kind.

So it's really lovely to see you go out of your way to commend them.

The poker world is becoming more & more toxic & hate-filled. I simply don't understand why.

    Many thanks, @Tikay10

It's not only in the poker world that is becoming more hate-filled. I work in retail, with the majority of it being customer-facing. It is almost a daily occurrence seeing a person generally being impatient, ignorant, selfish or downright rude. Usually over something very trivial or unprovoked, like it's a natural every-day behaviour for them.

I can only imagine it being a lot worse in the online CC world where they are dealing with 'keyboard warriors' who generally feel little embarrassment for their actions by essentially being hidden behind an alias.

It just seems to me, there's more and more people in this world who have an expectant and entitled attitude. Always blaming others and taking little personal responsibility. That can't be helping matters, especially for people dealing with these customer issues and complaints. For me, I always try to be polite. It costs nothing, and getting to a desirable outcome is far more likely.

Another pleasing day. Managed another profit. Not as much as last session, but still very decent. Although happy, I'm a little bit disappointed that I didn't reach at least HU in any of the tournaments tonight. I had a healthy stack in a few at the business end. Hey-ho. On we go.

I need to remove my finger from my rear end, and get my spreadsheet tweaked so I can start making these updates all sparkly and fancy with graphs and stuff, since there's quite a bit of data now.

I'm not too natural at excel, and because it takes me a while to figure things out (Which I usually do, even if its a super-duper long way of doing things), it's putting me off.

Maybe I'll do that in the coming days when my volume will be dropping because my nieces and nephew are staying over.

For most of you who are watching the final tomorrow, enjoy it. But... C'MON ITALY!!! :D

    Day 17

Even though I started my session later than I normally would, missing the FTT games in the process, it was yet another excellent and pleasing day of poker, with a fair few positives to take.

    - I felt I played the best I have for quite a while. Most of the tournaments I busted with dominating hands. The AIPF QQ vs 77 close to the FT of the Mini stung a bit.

    - It was the highest daily profit of the challenge so far.

    - The starting BR has now been doubled, and some. Which was the first basic monetary milestone I had in mind. Taking just 17 active days, and under a month to do so, surely must be something to be proud of. And I am. Especially without any significant wins (in £500+ guarantees). My next goal is to win one of those.

I really shouldn't even think about the negatives, but coming so close to that allusive £100 profit in a single tournament or day.

Another £2.30 reward ticket was also added to the BR which was used to part-enter the Mini.

    Here are the daily results.

Pretty uneventful. Only played 4 tournaments on Tuesday. It was so uneventful that I couldn't even find the effort to post an update

    image

    Daily Profit: -14.65

    Day 19

Tonight was even more uneventful. It's now 16 straight tournaments without any cashes. Only a handful of bounties helping it not be a complete write-off.

It's amazing how quickly in poker you can go from having a great session or two, to having nightmare sessions. It seems I don't fall into that middle ground very often. I guess that's the joys of tournament poker.

At least the BR is still above £500.

    Day 20

Tonight was a fairly enjoyable session. Although I only managed one cash, it was in the Mini Sharpshooter. Was looking good for a FT for a while, but cards just didn't fall my way at that important stage. At least that abysmal non-cashing streak has been broken, and along with some bounties from the others tourneys, I managed a nice little profit for the day.

On to tomorrow, I should be able to play the Mini Major, which I normally enjoy. It was this tournament, which I won a few good months ago, which kickstarted a great few months of poker for me. It would be only the 2nd time playing it since the start of this challenge. Fingers crossed for a decent outcome.
