The Highway Code will soon be updated to require people to open vehicle doors with the hand farthest from the handle following a safety drive led by cyclists.
From January 29th, the rules will state drivers and passengers should use the ‘Dutch reach’, so called as it was first popularised in the Netherlands.
The technique prompts people to turn their bodies towards the door, making them more likely to look into the road behind the vehicle and spot oncoming hazards.
Drivers blindly opening their doors with their right hand have been widely blamed for a spate of collisions with cyclists as more and more Britons use bikes.
Many Highway Code entries including the incoming addition are not legally enforceable but endangering people or causing injury by opening a door into a road is punishable by law with fines of up to £1,000.
Driving instructors will now be required to teach the technique.
The new Highway Code section under rule 239 will read: ‘Where you are able to do so, you should open the door using your hand on the opposite side to the door you are opening; for example, use your left hand to open a door on your right-hand side.
‘This will make you turn your head to look over your shoulder.
‘You are then more likely to avoid causing injury to cyclists or motor cyclists passing you on the road, or to people on the pavement.’

As far as cyclists go that's ok as long as they change the law to say every time you see one run a red light you can legally taser them.

A war of words is growing over the new highway code rules that came into force yesterday as cyclists accuse drivers of being 'ignorant' of the rules that say bikers should ride in the middle of their lane in some settings. Under the new rules, cyclists are now advised to ride in the centre of lanes on quieter roads, in slower-moving traffic, and when approaching junctions, to make themselves as visible as possible.The code also says that cyclists should be aware of people driving behind them and allow them to overtake when it is safe to do so. But an ugly war of words has broken out on social media between drivers who believe the rules amount to cyclists 'taking over the roads' and causing delays - and bikers who accuse motorists of being dangerous. Motorists yesterday complained about cyclists deliberately hogging the centre of the road, causing pile-ups of traffic behind them, after the rules came into force today. The new rules also introduce a 'hierarchy of road users' is also being introduced, meaning someone driving will have more responsibility to watch out for people cycling, walking, or riding a horse, and cyclists will have more responsibility to be aware of pedestrians. Now a top lawyer has warned that the new rules could lead to an avalanche of lawsuits over accidents caused by the new rules. Lawyer Nick Freeman, known as Mr Loophole, has criticised the major vamp as lacking 'common sense' and claimed they could make pedestrians and cyclists even more vulnerable to motorists and lead to more road accidents.

Why is it that it is the people that do not pay road tax (cyclists, horseriders, etc) get priority over the people who do pay-motorists?
