Press hysteria about boat people just won't let up.

Next to no-one comes by boat in the Winter. Because they don't want to die. That's why less than 6,000 have come in the 1st 3 months of the year. And the "record" number is because March has been mild. In any 3 month period between 2020 and 2023, the Tories waived in an average of 150,000+ legal migrants. Not 5,000-odd.

Am I a fan of getting other countries to process our asylum applications? Just about. Provided it is done fairly. And cheaper. Rwanda was neither of those 2 things.

Chris Philp. A man too thick for Reform....

There is no doubt in my mind that the widely reported boat arrivals wind many of the general public up.
Few are as calm as you, and many are not interested in actual stats.
I am also certain that this topic has contributed greatly to the popularity of Farage/Reform.
I am also in no doubt that whatever you thought of the Rwanda plan, it would have stopped the boats immediately, had it been implemented.
Who would have paid a people smuggler thousands to cross the channel, if they were definitely ending up in Rwanda immediately?
Not sure of any real difference between a Rwanda, or a Balkan plan.

Chris Philp easily features close to the top in my top ten of ar5ehole politicians.

I agree with everything apart from the bit in bold.

The Rwanda "plan" was not going to stop people coming in by boat. The few that agreed to go were given about £25,000 each. Hardly a deterrent.

That and the fact that no-one thinks they are going to get caught. Particularly the hundreds of thousands who came here perfectly legally, but have never left.

    I disagree.
The Rewanda plan was designed to deport 100% of the arrivals to Rwanda immediately.
Every one of the boats are intercepted before they reach our shores.
All the arrivals are escorted ashore.
There is no way that anyone would pay the people smugglers thousands, if they were guaranteed to be sent to Rwanda.
Many of them would choose to apply for asylum in one of the safe countries that they arrive at, prior to reaching France.
The boats would categorically, definitely stop.
They surely will if a similar arrangement is agreed with the Baltic countries.
    A valid example is Albania.
Thousands of the boat arrivals were from Albania.
Once an agreement was reached to immediately return them, Albanian arrivals stopped.
I think the same logic applies.
Why would an Albanian pay a pay a people smuggler thousands if they were guaranteed to be returned to Albania.

‘Why is everyone so stupid?’ Bev Turner erupts as biggest asylum hotel provider in Britain records staggering profits - ‘Migrants are laughing at us!’

Border security and asylum minister Angela Eagle said: "We have made the decision to remove Stay Belvedere Hotels from the Home Office supply chain and will not hesitate to take further action."

Government sources said SBHL was being stripped of its contract after an audit raised concerns about value for money for the taxpayer.

The Home Office cannot exit the contract without payment until September 2026.

There are currently more than 38,000 migrants in hotels, costing the Home Office £5.5 million per day.
This is 8,000 more asylum seekers than when Sir Keir Starmer pledged to "end asylum hotels" during the election campaign.

So if these figures are correct each migrant is costing us £144.74 per DAY or nearly £53,000 per annum to keep in hotels. Surely that can't be correct.

Hotel bills, including 3 meals per day, plus a small amount of benefit.
They are not allowed to work.

Most (nearly all) of the Right Wing conspiracy nut-jobs have left this forum.

Hats off to @Haysie for filling this "void" by providing large amounts of articles, largely devoid of actual facts, by many of the UK's leading fruitcakes.

If Bev Turner is the answer. Then it must be a very stupid question.

Covid denier. Climate change denier. Anti-Semite.

This is the 12th fake news article from the Telegraph you have subjected us to this month.

The Headline says 1 thing. The meat of the article (once you get halfway down) says precisely the opposite.

Yet again there was a 1st instance decision. Overturned on appeal. With exactly the opposite result of the headline.

If so that's a shame as the Telegraph always used to be one of the better papers

The Headline says 1 thing. The meat of the article (once you get halfway down) says precisely the opposite.

I've read the article, I think the headline is apt, the article covers the fact that the man had been convicted of sexually assaulting a minor, whilst already having convictions for assaulting his wife, assaulting emergency service workers and a previous sexual assault, yet a first tier tribunal judge decided that it would be 'unfair to deport him'. Only near the end does this get overturned by the upper tribunal after the Home Office appealed. I think the gist of the article is that it appears to be very difficult to deport an individual, even the scumbag (as polite as I can be) described in this piece.

Yet again there was a 1st instance decision. Overturned on appeal. With exactly the opposite result of the headline.

I wonder if he's actually been deported, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he was still here. Even if he has been deported he'll probably get back in.
