This sort of news story annoys me.

This is something made in China and sold in the UK.

Any US tariffs are irrelevant. This is just a Company profiteering and blaming someone else.

I heard a story on the news the other day, which said that lots of the bits are manufactured in China, but the phones are finished in the USA, hence the tariffs.
    Dont know the full story.

Apple's tariff crisis explained — here's why iPhone, AirPods, Macs and Apple Watch may get a lot more expensive

Apple, like many other companies, will no doubt be scrambling to ascertain the true impact of President Trump's sweeping tariffs on its global production line. The rollout of "reciprocal tariffs" went into effect on April 2 and included a number of countries Apple relies on to manufacture or assemble its products.

China is where most of the 200 million annual iPhones are produced was hit with a 54% tariff which could have huge implications for the price of the iPhone 17 Pro Max and other upcoming handsets.

But it's not just China and it's not just the iPhone that could be dealt a huge blow from President Trump's "Liberation Day." Tim Cook has made strong efforts to diversify the company's supply chain in recent years, moving away from China and into countries like India and Vietnam. Unfortunately for Apple, both of those regions — among many others — will also be hit with stringent new levies.

"Apple will still be taking a hit on iPhones made in India, AirPods made in Vietnam and Macs made elsewhere in Asia," wrote Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter.

As Gurman sees it, here are Apple's production hubs that are most badly affected by the new tariffs:

    No.

That's why Apple products will cost more in America. Which is something Trump can control

And the original article was clearly written by someone who has no idea how tariffs work.

The new rules may mean that foreign suppliers will have an incentive to open US plants for US trade. But, conversely, any goods destined for anywhere else are going to avoid the US completely.

This goes back to what I said earlier on another thread.

Most Americans do not understand International Trade. Simply because they tend to think only of 2 nations-the USA and everywhere else

Whereas in the real world lots of trade happens that completely ignores the USA

    This is all nonsense.

It is just a scare story about what could happen to UK prices if Apple decided to build UK spec phones in the US instead of China.

Which they are never going to do. Because it would be commercial suicide.

This is just UK Press cut and pasting US articles. And making a scare story.

Giving Apple the excuse to "only" put prices up by a smaller amount-with precisely zero reason for it.

    These are not "experts".

Take it from someone that used to genuinely be one.

The tariffs would apply if all the Apple products were imported into the USA, and distibuted from there?

Exactly. (Plus, of course, any products sold in the USA)

And that is never going to happen

This may have made sense until very recently, particularly if the products underwent some quality control in the US, or if Apple wished to avoid existing tariffs put on by the countries they were exporting to.
Lots of countries have tariffs on many products manufactered in China.

Correct. The American articles referred to some Apple items being "finished" in the US, India and elsewhere for that very reason.

Now US Imports cannot avoid that by those methods.

But UK sales can. (Provided they avoid the US, of course)

But if the phones arrived here direct from China, they would be subject to any tariffs we may have on Chinese products, which could be avoided if arriving via the US.

According to that article, the American bits are innovation and design rights.

Want to take a guess at which bits don't attract a tariff?

To be honest of all the things that have happened and will happen due to the global sh*t storm caused by the orange idiot trying to control the world, an increase in price of a bit of tech that is already massively overpriced is the least of our worries, What really gets my goat is that he can do this and no one appears able to stop him.

Assuming they are exported direct from China, and elswhere, that means there will be a huge disparity in prices between the US and the rest of the world.
    That will p1ss them off.

Howard Lutnick Says Army Of Millions Will Build iPhones In The US, But Could Trump's Tariffs Make The Premium Apple Flagship Cost $2,300?

On Saturday, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhones could soon be made in the U.S. as part of President Donald Trump's push to bring manufacturing back to American soil.

What Happened: In an appearance on CBS's Face the Nation, Lutnick said that Trump's tariffs would incentivize companies to move their production to the U.S., reducing reliance on overseas factories.

"The army of millions and millions of human beings screwing in little screws to make iPhones — that kind of thing is going to come to America," Lutnick said.

There was a video on one of the articles above, where one of the guys claimed that it would cost $20bn, and take 3 years for Apple to be able to manufacture iPhones in the USA.
He went on to say that if you want $3,500 iPhones you would manufacture them in New Jersey, but if you want $1,000 iPhones you would manufacture them in China.

We've had Trussonomics. Where someone believed they knew more about economics than economists. And people laughed.

Trumponomics is exactly the same. Someone taking a single fact. And believing that 1 thing can be changed for the better without consequences. Like a toddler.

If we take 1 fact in isolation-that i-phones might be made in America-that might happen. Because, provided we run with the theory that there are no other factors involved, there would be a tax incentive to make them in the US for sale in the US.

But that ignores 4 things. Firstly, that various parts come from abroad, and will be taxed. Secondly, that labour costs in the US are way higher than 3rd World countries. Which is, of course, why US countries outsource stuff in the first place. And thirdly, that most major Companies are Headquartered in the US-that would change if the US Office could only deal with internal US markets. Fourthly, US Foreign policy for the last 100 years has been competing with Russia and China in fostering economic ties to mineral rich 3rd World countries-tariffs place the US at a disadvantage.

The other thing to point out is that it uses a 1950s economic model for 2020's trade. Most world trade is in services, not goods. Has been for decades. And totally ignored in all of this.

People can vote for slogans. But, most of all, they vote with their pockets. All of this will make the US voter, and the US billionaire, much poorer/less wealthy.
