When should the Digger stop digging?

Here's the scene; last night's Primo, about 150 still in, I'm sitting comfortably in the top 20 steadily building my stack when this hand comes along.....
The button and BB were short stacked so I knew i was only effectively playing the SB who hadn't long joined the table. Button and BB fold but SB calls and when the flop comes down he instantly shoves......

Now is this bit right or wrong? I think I've got the best hand as it stands! If he's got A7 or A8 he'd check, likewise if he's hit a set. A PP or bigger ace and he would've shoved on me pre flop.
So I think I'm ahead BUT its a straightening, flushing board and I think he's drawing! Do I Call or Fold, bearing in mind my current position in the tournament and the fact that its for a third of my stack?

I personally would fold there as you could already be beat or he could, like you say, have a flush and or straight draw which he wants to risk his tourney on. I would keep hold of my chips and look for a better spot to trap or push against him which will then put the decision on him and not you.

Where did you finish BTW?

And do you see any half dug holes as half empty or half full?....:)

he could have nearly anything. He could have seen your cut off raise as a steal, which he planned to get you off by pushing the flop, or he has a genuine hand, or he is drawing.

The best for you obviously would be that he had no hand no draw, but how likely is that? I would be tempted to fold this one myself and find a better spot.

I like your analysis of putting him on a hand, it makes sense, and therefore, if you have him on the draw, you have to call. I think tourny position shouldn't really influence your decision here. You have a very comfortably stack to play even if he has the better ace, which is what I would be worried about, ace 8/9/ten maybe even jack could flat pre flop sometimes.....But like you said to do this and then open shove when hitting the ace would be madness, as the chances are you will have hit, or will represent the ace if checked to you, and a bet pretty much commits you to the pot.

We dont have any info on the villian which makes it hard, looking at the hand tho i would definately put him on A9, A10, AJ and would be looking for a better spot, if you had reads on the villian the hand would be easier to play imo!!!

Call the flop, and raise smaller preflop especially when there are short stacks around and the blinds are this big.

fold pre its a rag ace, always gets you into trouble in tourneys.

As played, it looks like a straight/flush draw shove from the villain, and given what you believe he was doing you had to call it.

Thanks for all the replies people, much appreciated! Hindsight is such a wonderful thing in poker and when I looked back at the hand I..... heck I'd play it the same way every time! If you want to win these kind of events you have to trust your instinct, your reads, your assumptions and hope your luck holds out!

So the Poker Gods decided my time was up! The very next hand I lost half my remaining stack to a nicely disguised set of 3s and 16 hands later I was out 88 up against AQ and the flop was AQQ game over well played! Thanks again for all your input
