Aliases

Does an alias make you have a perception of what a player is like?

Or does it make you think the opposite of what they are trying to be?

For example - would someone called 'FluffyBunny' or 'RubbishFish' be different to someone called 'ProShark' or 'PokerKing' in you eyes?

Not really, usually if someone is trying to claim they're a fish wants you to believe it, so the opposite? But not difference at all for me.

Sometimes names like utg+1 or soemthing technical like that signifies they're not newbies.  Probably better examples out there...

It definitely affects perceptions! My alias was taken from my sky sports fantasy football team name jdsallstars but I get quite regular abuse "not much of a star after that pot are you" etc I definitely think people have made moves/calls on me that i believe they might not have done had my alias been something like jd6872. Impossible to tell if its helped or hindered my winnings but definitely influences people.

I sometimes think the avatars people choose reflects their personality/play more. I.e. bald guy sunglasses avatar tend to be worst players I find. There is of course many exceptions and it wouldn't really affect my decision making against an unknown just something I've noticed. Its also the main reason I chose the basic avatar when playing.

Willhelm has covered the only thing I ever pay attention to with an alias. If they use a technical term, they've obviously played for a while or at least been around on the forums for a while. Doesn't mean they're brilliant but they generally have a basic understanding at a minimum

There seems to be a lot of things that make you think someone is good.

But what aliases make you think they might not be good?

When they use their own name as an alias....totally NO imagination what-so-ever.......

    Examples for this are.......

    Ricorford
    Sky_Poker
    Tikay10
(the only ones I could use without upsetting people who would take it the wrong way!)

    Examples against.....

    TommyD
    GaryQQQ
    Mattbates

In my case the name denotes my allegiance to Plymouth Argyle  so everybody regards me (probably correctly) as a complete moron.
