table etiquette

ok so I was playing £500 bh tonight and a new player at the table starting announcing their hand in the chat box during the middle of the hands. i.e. someone raised their bb and they said something along the lines of "10s bingo time" before shoving all in. 2nd time I raised 3 x bb, 1 caller and again from bb she said "AK" before calling. I won the hand anyway :)

after the second time I asked them quite politely to stop at which point they said to me "if you rr me I will call my hand out". one of the two hands they announced was shown and the hand they announced was the same.

Was I right to inform cs? I feel like a real snitch. If not what else should I do?

Report, report, report........weird behaviour is out of order and ruins people's enjoyment. We want a fair game. You did the correct thing. Nice one...

To be fair, if someone wants to tell me their hand during play that's fine by me lol. Personally I wouldn't believe them, even if they got to showdown once and they told the truth I still wouldn't take what they said in future hands as red.

I might be wrong but I don't think they're actually breaking any rules, just leave them to it.

Decided to have a google to see if there was a hard fast rule on this and it appears it's a bit of a murky area lol seems to be a lot of info saying you're allowed to lie about your hand but telling the truth is against the rules - very strange. you'd think the rules regarding this kind of thing would be pretty much black and white.

for anyone who's interested here's a couple of links I found:

You know that when people say they have a certain hand..... a)  They probably don't      b)   Even if they do, you can never be sure.  So just pretend you dont know ....

Agree, does anyone know the exact rule on what you can say about your hand, I have also read that you can lie about what you have but not tell the truth. I remember a cash game on Poker TV with Rob Yong, Rastarfish and a couple of sportsmen and a bit of a dispute broke out but one of the guys was anouncing what he had. Please, someone who knows the rule....DO TELL

It can vary between venues, but I know that at Dusk til Dawn, as long as you're involved in the hand you can say whatever you like as I've seen the floor called and asked to confirm this.

Whenever i have played live the rule has been, you can say what you think the other person has but you cant say what you have, whether that be true or false, you can normally get away with saying the kind of range you have if for any reason you wanted to, But i have always been made aware you cant name your cards until after the hand., I have no idea if the same rules apply online but i guess its always best to check

it sounds like something that would be really easy to have a rule for but when you think about it it's actually quite difficult.

I.e. saying "I have AK" or "can you beat top pair top kicker?"

seemed to be a bit of an argument between negreanu and some event official took place regarding it.

    http://www.creators.com/lifestylefeatures/pets/lucky-dog-poker/negreanu-savage-square-off-over-tda-s-table-talk-rule.html

I think the collusion argument is reason enough to ban anything like it. i.e. if disclosing your hands was allowed it would make collusion almost impossible to detect.

Harsh comments...... I think we all want to play within the rules dont we???? Sounds like some of maybe dont !!!

Personally I feel you should not be able to say what you actually have but could say anything else. As long as we know they are not saying what they actually have then they could have any 2 cards but the ones they say they have. I dont think they should even be able to say the range "I have a decent pair", if they have a pair,

Frank, ignoring the obvious obnoxious nature of your posts, can I ask why you come on to the skypoker forum but don't actually play poker on sky?

At my local casino you can say whatever you want about your holdings. As the floor put it we allow speech play here so you can say what you want about your hand providing you are still in the hand.

Some plank (local player, not a Sky guy) at SPT Luton last year was very vocal about what he had, or at least claimed to have. Just thinking about him tilts me.

It's a bit of a grey area really.

Don't see how it would matter to be honest. Imo if someone tells you what they have, I'd just ignore it and play the hand as if they hadn't said anything.

If you're stacking off cos you believed them or because you didn't despite what you'd have normally done if they hadn't said anything, then you've done exactly what they were aiming to get you to do.
