    the written language - Chinese - is only for reading and writing. and a lot of native Chinese cannot do that as many a taxi driver over there has proved.

    the spoken languages meanwhile are very diverse.
    From Mandarin to Cantonese, Uyghur to a whole load of ethnic alternatives.
    Although Mandarin is the official language many Chinese cannot speak it.
