The very 1st hand of a bounty hunter. Wat do??

Literally the first hand, I get AQoff UTG. I 3x raise to 60, guy in the cut off ships it, everybody else folds.

What is the correct play? Pros are if you win the hand you get a bounty (about a third of the BI) and basically start the tournament with a double stack so the potential to take further bounties early on. Conns are, most of the time you will be flipping or dominated, occasionally it might be AJ or worse.

I've seen people make this move in low stakes BHs a fair few times and wondered what the right play is.

If it's an £11BH or lower I'd fold AQo, probably call something like TT+ and AK

Was the 2.5k bh £11 bi, last night. Normally I would fold I think, I called last night, villain showed 10s, Q on the flop, A on the river. Happy days. It does give you a lot of leverage having double the stack. I played it quite aggressive and got another bounty a few hands later. I have noticed some players seem to open shove very early, I don't know if it's a " double or quits" attitude. If it is a genuine tactic I don't know how profitable it would be, although even at £11 bi people call off 50bb shoves with kj, a10 etc.

    I would just fold.

We only have 60 chips invested.

It's amazing the amount of times I have seen people do this with QQ plus.

Most often we are totally dominated here.

Very good argument for also folding AK.

Snap AKs and QQ+, think about JJ....probably fold AQ. Though vs a complete random, and if you're in a punting mood, might sometimes call with as low as AJs, as you do see some funky shoves early doors.

lol shows how bad an MTT player I am, I'd snap call this in a low stakes BH and expect to see all sorts of rags.

If they've levelled me into a call and they have KK/AA then VWP them.

Perhaps I've just been sat against big gamblers too frequently in early stages of MTTs... its skewed my thinking by the amount of times I've seen middling suited connectors/any 2 face cards/any ace in spots like these... or even just shoving every hand in a sort of 'double or quits' start to a game.

That is my job, Ducky ;)

PS - I'm happy with a fold or a call really. AQ is a horrid hand at the best of times...

I'm with shakinaces. Not sure it's a 'snap' call but I agree we are ahead or crushing a lot more than the opposite. Call or fold fine, arguments for both. What it isn't is a mistake to do either.

Where possible we want to be avoiding flips in MTTs and winning uncontested chips, here we are taking one first hand.

If you ship all-in on the very first hand, you either have the cards, too much money or don't have the time.

So if the fella who shoves first hand then repeats the move for the first 2, 3, 4+ hands of a game (as happens from time to time in games I play)... how many hands do we give it before we consider calling with less than QQ+?

And when (if?) we do consider calling, how wide do we open our calling range?
