In Response to Re: Changes to Sky Poker TV : The Show Thread for tonight will go up shortly, Rose. We are hoping that tonight & Thursday will be fun Shows, and then the new adventure begins. Posted by Tikay10
He didn't look like a 'Rose' when I saw him in Nottingham! The avatar got me at first to be fair.
Interested to see where it goes from here, hopefully onwards and upwards.
Without replying to the forum troll, I would just like to reiterate that I have, from day one, supported most of the live shows via the show thread and come to know most presenters/analysts IRL. I will genuinely feel sad at its loss if this is the case.
I also hope that we can at least have that 'community' feel to any new format of shows.
This is a real shame, i actually only started to get really interested in Poker having stumbled across the show one evening, the hands being shown and the dynamic involved fascinated me, listening to the analysis and seeing the skill involved was an eye opener for me. This led to asking friends who played if I could join their home games on Stars and when they organised 'live' games. I then deposited £20 on Sky and have played here ever since. Sometimes 'cost cutting' has unforeseen negatives......its unlikely I would ever have played without having seen the show. Posted by HENDRIK62
Yo Scottish Golf bloke,
Others have also suggested "cost cutting", but it's a lot wider than that, its not just cost, it's more about the legal difficulties & being cost-effective.
The Team who run Ch 861 - Dan, Chan & Louis - remain in place & are all revved up, chomping at the bit, to do Sky Poker TV. Remember, it matters to them as much as it does to anyone.

Oops, apologies, I confused "Irish Rose" with "frascait" because of the avatar.
Easy enough mistake to make, right?
Onwards & upwards? You bet. SB&G as a whole is stunningly successful, despite what you may read from time to time, & Sky Poker is very much part of that success, & will continue to be.
I think we can all agree that the software may not be the best on the market but its the tv channel and the whole fun feel that kept people playing on the site. I hope that now with the reduced costs of not having the tv channel that sky poker can now stay in line with the rest of the markets rake structure at the lower levels. The rake on £5bhs and below should be reduced to 10% as it gives players at these levels a chance and also rake on rebuys and addons should be scrapped.

Hey HiLo Crusher,
In the time it took me to compose my short paragraph (edited 3 or 4 times......the cost of being a perfectionist :-))
many posts and replies had appeared and my post was somewhat outdated.....a bit like my poker most days :-)
Thanks for taking time to try and answer a lot of the points and i hope you and the team take the channel to new heights of excellence......;-))
Well changes happen, they can't be helped. Had a feeling this was coming after that survey a couple of months ago. Everyone I know put down how important the channel was but I guess I don't know many people. A few of initial thoughts. 1) I really hope there is an aggressive and continuous marketing campaign for however this new model will work. The description is far too vague for us to know now but without a base like ch. 861, a successful business will really have to bang out the advertising to attract new players. And obviously not via just Twitter or facebook, those people already follow you so already know you and just marketing there is clearly pointless. Losing the base channel is losing the biggest method of attracting new players, I really hope the marketing plan is already in place. 2) Please follow through with 'some new ideas which we will share at a later date' and 'some exciting plans for it and the Sky Poker community will still be a big part of it.' Claims like these over the years to a cynic could be described as a fob off as it has not always been clear these things ever arrived. 3) Losing this alongside a long absence of a regional affordable tour feels like a break away from grass roots poker, an area Skypoker was easily the UK leader in and frankly what made this site a lot more fun than many others. I hope future plans are focussed on this and what gave Skypoker such a great niche isn't lost in the shuffle. Posted by TommyD
+1 on Tommy's points, also would be a real shame to see the high class such as ryan spittles and joe stapleton be taken away from sky poker tv by competitors. Also how is it going to be streamed? I recommend a twitch channel as thats such a good outlet for poker on tv nowadays. Would defo watch a stream if you did one Tommy.

Hi Conor,
Yes, the TV channel helps, but it's a whole lot of other things, too, TV is just a part of a far larger jigsaw.
I can't comment on rake structures because I have no idea of their thinking on such things, but the overall results of Sky Poker suggest that they have the right demand v cost v value ratios in place. That's a separate discussion, really.
We can debate the logic of how adjusting prices adjusts demand all day & never reach concensus. Of course people would prefer rake to be less, but they seem to have pitched it right so far. If they had not, then they would have adjusted already, imo. They review numbers in frightening detail, & all the time, it is a non-stop process of self-examinatation to help build a better business. They measure, every day, hundreds of metrics & review them every week..

Hi Fellow Hi-Lo crusher.
Happy to answer any questions.
It's amazing this place, that the customers care so much, (by replying & commenting so constructively) you don't see that much elsewhere.

Hi JJ,
The existing Live Stream wil be discontinued.
Twitch?
My oh my, you are going to get me in a world of hurt with Suit City, because this is currently under the radar as to their plans, but yes, Twitch is very much in the thinking. We discussed it at length recently, the tentative first steps have now been put in place, some briefings have already happened, & it will happen very soon. It was actually due to start this week, but some aspects of how Sky Poker approach it still need some work. It needs to be done "just so".
You should definitley Hire some of the regs on the site to act as affiliates for X% of that players rake. I for one have and could bring over a decent proportion of players from other sites and I am sure I am not the only one.

Hi bud,
Appreciated.
That's something that is way beyond my knowledge & remit, so I can't really comment, in all the years I've been in poker, I've never got involved in that stuff.
They do have a very slick Acquisition Team though.
I've been with the TV side here since October 2006, so I know the backstory pretty well, & want to try & reply to all relevant questions, but acquisition is way outside my brief.
Hi teeks I'm sure their decision is very commercial it's just some businesses look at more than the immediate financial gains as clearly sky did running the channel all those soft factors define the character and it's that character that is being dumped for the commercial imperative whereas many of us on the forum love the old character sky tv which is why many of us are here spts vlvs etc you are right it isn't the end of the world there is a lot of potential with ukpcs hopefully many more vlvs but the old character is definitely going down the drain the community has rallied together to recreate spts but live tv might be beyond our capability Posted by GELDY
Hi Gelders,
Respect for your opinions, but the suggestion that the Business is only looking at "immediate financial gain" is a little unfair, imo.
They have short, medium & long term targets & goals to continue to invest in, & build, the various SB&G platforms. All of them are currently on a strong growth trajectory, the results prove that, but that's not enough, they have to continue with growing & building.
We'll never all agree on the best way of achieving that, though. The Team up in Leeds have a far better view of the Business than you or I do, it has to be said.
concentrating on pre recorded shows you say! so the same old repeats we have to watch now ! surely your tv figures show the live shows are the winners !
i would rather have the 3 5 hour live shows and nothing else and sure most feel the same ? couldnt a slot be found on another channel if its about cost cutting??

I don't post very often but I think, regardless of reasons such as legal factors etc, that removing Channel 861 is a loss to poker and putting on my business and marketing head, a mistake in my view. The main reason is simply that I when I stumbled across 861, I was a very, very, very rubbish poker player but after listening to the advice from the likes of Joe, Tkay, Redmond, Karl, Ryan and others, I'm now just a very rubbish poker player rather than the "very, very, very rubbish poker player" that I was before - I'd imagine others improved far more drastically then me though!
So without sounding like a creep, I genuinely mean this, thank you to all those people who are and were associated with Channel 861.

It's not just to do with cost cutting Scotty, that's a relatively minor part of it.
For legal, Licensing & regulatory reasons, it cannot continue "as was".
Going forward, it's not so much "pre-recorded Shows", as a weekly Live Show, and a lot of pre-recorded material - Poker Strategy, Education, in depth Interviews (one is in the can already), more location shoots at Live Tournaments & Festivals, & so on. The Sky Poker Team will be "working" all that stuff hard, because it drives business.
Certainly we'll miss the 24/7 Live, as was, yes, but it is what it is, the decision wont be changed, & plans for the new adventure are gathering speed.
I'll be watching the Roller Final Table tonight, mind, any idea who finished 2nd?
