1983

35 years ago today, the UK endured Breakfast TV for the very first time.

With a few exceptions, (Big Breakfast etc) it has remained utter, dire pap ever since. The world could, possibly, get along without it, imo.

Wonder what happened to the chap on the left? Then again, maybe make that rhetorical, we don't really want to know.

    2008

A BA 777, inbound from Beijing, landed short of the runway at Heathrow after fuel icing problems.

Had it landed 150 yards sooner, it would have crashed smack into Hatton Cross Tube Station with unimaginable consequences.

By a miracle, the pilot somehow got the aircraft down without loss of life, though the hull was a write off.

Must be an awful feeling for the pilots, on final approach you ask for more power and neither engine responds correctly, not a lot you can do then. From memory didn't they raise the flaps to gain speed and a few extra yards? BA pilots have always tended to be be pretty good, haven't they.

The opposite, in fact - they REDUCED the flap angle to reduce aero drag, failing which they would not have reached the airport.

    See.....

Meanwhile, the captain reduced the flap setting from 30 degrees to 25 degrees to decrease the drag on the aircraft and stretch the glide

Good spot Ryan, that's exactly the idea. Gives some food for thought.

I hope others join in & post similar stuff.

    1996

The IRA planted a bomb which blew up a London bus, killing 3 passengers.

Such things were always routine at the time. Such dreadful memories. Thank God for peace in Ireland.

    1969

    Lulu & Maurice Gibb married.

Maurice was a Bee Gee, but passed away some 15 years ago.

Lulu, meanwhile, is still around & has aged wonderfully.

On this day in 2014, UKIP councillor David Silvester blamed the recent storms and heavy floods across Britain on the Government's decision to legalise gay marriage.

Subsequently, he also said that homosexuality was a "spiritual disease" and should be healed. UKIP suspended him from the party on 19 January 2014. His comments prompted a Facebook campaign by gay activists to send the popular anthem "It's Raining Men" to UK number one.

    Staggering! The mind truly boggles.

Amazingly, on this day 71 years ago, Dolly Parton was born. Never realised she was that old.

There's surely a Caption Competition in this photo?

A day of joy, as Iran releases the 52 American hostages after 444 days.

    Quite a story, this, as you can see from the Wiki page;

The current Emley Moor transmitting station, situated in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, began transmitting UHF broadcasts for Yorkshire Television. At 330.4 metres (1,084 ft) tall, it is the tallest free-standing structure in the United Kingdom and is a Grade II listed building.

I thought you would be all over this one Tikay.

    Ooh, good spot @dragon1964

It's built of concrete - great material that - unlike the previous Emley Moor mast which was constructed in steel. That ended badly.

48 years ago today the world became a smaller place, & a word, previously used only for elephants, became a much used adjective, when a Jumbo Jet arrived in London for the first time.

Over 1,500 "Jumbo Jets" - real name "Boeing 747" - were made.

Production has almost entirely ended now, & sadly, these icons of the sky are being gracefully retired, to be replaced with more fuel efficient aircraft such as the Dreamliner, aka Boeing 787.

Only one rival was ever built, the spectacular Airbus A380, but just 222 were built, & it's likely that production of this magnificent beast will cease shortly.

    Well done @dragon1964 that's a great spot.

How about this for a stat? - he played 399 times for Everton, & scored 349 times.

That goals per game ratio is only a smidgeon behind Lionel Messi, & Messi has a great team around him & plays in a weak league that has little depth.
