    1953

Derek Bentley was executed by hanging at Wandsworth Prison for the murder of a policeman.

Bentley, who was illiterate & had a mental age of 11, was posthumously pardoned & eventually his conviction for murder was quashed. Not much comfort to Bentley by then, of course.

    1959

London was enveloped by a huge fog, a real "pea-souper" as it used to be called.

Homes & factories were all coal-fired in those days, so eventually the Clean Air Act was passed.

This cracking photo was taken at Liverpool St Station, and shows one of those lovely old Train Indicator boards that made such a lovely rat-a-tat-tat noise when they changed.

    1953

Disaster as MV Princess Victoria, the British Railway operated Ro-Ro ferry from Stranraer to Larne, capsizes during gale force winds & heavy seas, 133 passengers & crew died.

The cause was almost exactly the same as that which sunk the Herald of Free Enterprise 34 years later with the loss of 193 lives.

None of the women & children on board survived.

    1983

The wearing of seat belts was made compulsory in the UK, which, in the subsequent 35 years, saved thousands of lives.

To promote the new law, the Government devised a slogan - clunk-click, every trip - & to front the TV ads recruited a British TV Personality who was liked, idolised almost, by the UK population.

    2000

Serial-killer Harold Shipman was jailed after being found guilty of 15 murders.

In a subsequent Inquiry, it became clear that, in total, he murdered 250 victims.

His MO - he was a GP - was to visit the homes of elderly patients & inject them with lethal doses of morphine. This was after he had befriended them, & coerced them into making him the beneficiary in their Will.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment with the recommendation that he never be released. 4 years later, in his cell at Wakefield Prison, he hung himself.

Think I missed the mark with this thread, although personally I enjoy looking back at milestones & headlines.

The thread has been going for 2 weeks, has 51 posts (mostly mine), & yet only has 260 views, so it's clearly not of much interest to many. Takes a bit of work to do, too.

I can use the time saved to better effect with threads that garner more interest.

Of course, if anyone else fancies making the occasional post here for special days, feel free to do so.
