Not long now, I sent syndicate members an email from Harry Whittington's yard, re his Cheltenham runners.
Pleasing weight carrying performance from CRIEVEHILL today franks the form for both SAINT CALVADOS (ARKLE) and indeed BIGMARTRE (JLT)
CRIEVEHILL of course was well beaten by both DRUMCLIFF (who in turn was well beaten by SAINT CALVADOS in the KINGMAKER) and he was also beaten a distance by BIGMARTRE, so it franks the form of both horses nicely.
SAINT CALVADOS will want cut in the ground (looking likely touch wood) and BIGMARTRE will want it a bit faster, which he may get by the Thursday.
SAINT CALVADOS is best priced 7/2 now and BIG M (As my niece calls him) is best priced 16/1 for the JLT.
Lets hope they turn up fit and well, jump well, avoid accidents and run their race. I do think Saint Calvados is something special, and he will need to be to beat the mighty FOOTPAD, PETIT MOUCHOIR, BRAIN POWER etc, but he may just be THAT GOOD.
How will he run on the undulations at Cheltenham, who knows, although personally I think, in soft ground, he will handle it OK. WARWICK isn't a completely flat track, with a decent hill going up towards the back straight, and he won the KINGMAKER there by 22 lengths. Obviously the undulations at Cheltenham are more severe and the way SAINT CALVADOS gallops with that long stride, there is an argument that flatter surfaces would suit him better, but he may just have the class to win at Cheltenham in what potentially looks like the race of the festival.
It looks like there will only be about six runners (although anti-post place terms are still valid, so those that took the 25/1 E/W on Saint Calvados certainly appear to have a value bet)
I think BIGMARTRE, may find one or two, too good, but has an outstanding chance of being placed.
Harry's 3rd runner is SIMPLY THE BETTS in the SUPREME NOVICE HURDLE (first race of the festival) He is a very tough horse with a decent turn of foot and could run well for his odds of 40/1 in what to me, looks like a weak renewal of the race.
Outside of Harry's horses, I can't see past BUVEUR DAIR and MIGHT BITE for the CHAMPION HURDLE and GOLD CUP respectively. The former is very short, but the 10/3 available on MIGHT BITE looks massive to me.
Hi G. I've been a bit concerned about the form of Harry Whittington's stable, especially after SAINT CALVADOS's run in the ARKLE. I know they went a bit too fast, but sadly he was beaten at halfway, which definitely isn't his true form, so I just checked the Trainerform to see when his previous winner was, and saw it was last Thursday at Ludlow with ROUGE VIF, the bumper horse you gave us as one to look out for..... Completely missed it Prior to that Harry's previous winners were at Warwick, the day you went (10th February), so I think he must have had a bit of a bug in the yard in the meantime Hope you was on ROUGE VIF last week

Sadly, I missed ROUGE VIF too. :=(
I am not aware of any bug at the yard, but they may not necessarily tell me if there was.
The feedback I got re Saint Calvados was that he went off too quick and ran out of gas.
Although as you correctly say, he was beaten by half way, but no reasons were forth coming.
I'm sure they are all a bit disappointed with Cheltenham, but as far as I am aware at least, all horses came back sound.
