This current Government manages to sit on fences in a way that reminds me of Corbyn in relation to the EU.
Let me give 2 examples from my own family.
My eldest works in the village pub. IF this Government had ordered pubs to close, they could claim on their insurance. But it hasn't, so the pub is staying open.
My youngest was due to go to a London theatre tomorrow. Not a jolly-the ensuing critique of that play counts for 40% of the Drama A-level. London theatres all closed yesterday-again, it is believed many cannot claim on insurance as they are not compelled to close. They hope that the withdrawal of attendance of emergency workers may help.
Let's put this into perspective. This Government has not banned the public from attending. But it is saying that it is too dangerous for trained paramedics to attend. Really? Compare/contrast with schools...
Do you think all holiday insurance will cover medical treatment for covid 19, or will you end up re-mortgaging your house should you contract it on holiday in Europe, after January.
Angela Merkel: UK must live with consequences of weaker ties to EU
The UK will have to “live with the consequences” of Boris Johnson ditching Theresa May’s plan to maintain close economic ties with the EU after Brexit, Angela Merkel has said, hardening her tone over the prospect of a no-deal scenario at the end of the year. After more than three years in which the German chancellor repeatedly emphasised her openness to a deal that would maintain the UK’s current flows of trade with the bloc, she suggested the door leading to such a compromise had now closed.

I think Boris is likely to try to blame the Brexit repercussions on the coronavirus.

Johnson repeats no-deal threat after Merkel warns of economic ‘consequences’
Boris Johnson has repeated his threat of walking away from trade talks with Brussels after German chancellor Angela Merkel warned Britain would have to “live with the consequences” of abandoning close ties. During a conversation on Saturday with Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Downing Street confirmed Mr Johnson reiterated that the UK was prepared to leave on “Australia terms” if no agreement was forthcoming. Australia has no bespoke trade deal with the European Union, leading Brexit critics to describe the proposals as akin to leaving on no-deal terms, albeit with a number of mini-deals put in place to allow vital sectors, such as air travel, to continue.
The remarks come after German leader Ms Merkel warned that Britons would have to “live with the consequences” of Mr Johnson rejecting predecessor Theresa May’s plan to continue close economic links with Brussels after Brexit.
In comments carried by The Guardian, Mrs Merkel said: “With Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the British Government wants to define for itself what relationship it will have with us after the country leaves. “It will then have to live with the consequences, of course, that is to say with a less closely interconnected economy. “If Britain does not want to have rules on the environment and the labour market or social standards that compare with those of the EU, our relations will be less close.”
THE head of the Government’s own expert customs panel has warned of looming chaos at ports after the “amateurish” handling of a new IT system. The Goods Vehicle Movement Service is intended to help goods flow across Britain’s borders and cut queues. Industry groups said they were only notified about the system in the past fortnight. Unlike France, the UK has still not tested its new customs system.
Peter MacSwiney, chairman of the HMRC-sponsored joint customs consultative committee, said businesses were already re-routing out of Britain to avoid what they expect will be carnage from January, when the UK leaves the single market and customs union. “The GVMS relies on a flow of data that we don’t have,” he said. “It’s been devised without any thought of how things actually work in the real world. How the **** is the driver going to know what the customs entry is? It’s amateurish.”
Mr MacSwiney added that one commercial body that liaises with HMRC on customs had developed an alternative system and presented it to the Border Delivery Group in 2018. “That system can deliver what HMRC needs but they appear to be unwilling to accept a commercial solution,” he said. Rod McKenzie, chief executive of the Road Haulage Association, described the draft text as “incomprehensible pie-in-the-sky” thinking.
Liz Truss warns Boris Johnson over Brexit border plans International trade secretary tells PM and chancellor plans risk smuggling and damage to UK reputation
An extraordinary cabinet row has erupted over Brexit with Liz Truss warning that Boris Johnson’s border plans risk smuggling, damage to the UK’s international reputation and could face a legal challenge from the World Trade Organization.
The international trade secretary wrote to the chancellor, Rishi Sunak, and Michael Gove on Wednesday warning of four “key areas of concern” over their plans for the border next January. In a letter, dated 8 July, leaked to website Business Insider and also seen by the Guardian, she says: “Dear Rishi and Michael, I am writing to you to set out my key areas of concern on border policy and readiness for the end of the transition period and to seek your assurance that the concerns will be addressed.”
Brexit was meant to make Britain global. It has made us friendless
Rafael Behr A strategic partnership with the EU is not on Boris Johnson’s agenda, and any alliance with the US will be dictated by Donald Trump
It is not a secret that Britain is leaving the EU. The coronavirus crisis has dominated 2020 but not obliterated memory of the years before. Still, to be on the safe side, the government is spending £93m on a Brexit refresher campaign with the slogan “check, change, go”. This is aimed at people who have dealings with Europe and might be under the illusion that it will be as easy in the future as it has been in the past. No one has done more to cultivate that misapprehension than Boris Johnson. The government’s new message on Brexit is to disregard what the prime minister used to say on the subject.
Areas of the UK that voted to leave the EU have suffered the biggest economic hit since the 2016 referendum, according to new research that suggests Brexit is likely to further complicate efforts to level up underperforming regions. The research from the Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy at Warwick University found that the parts of the UK with high levels of low-skilled and manufacturing employment have underperformed most since 2016. These areas also heavily voted Leave in the EU referendum. Many of the districts were won by the Conservatives for the first time in the 2019 election and have unusually high levels of furloughed workers, raising the prospect that they could also be hardest hit by the coronavirus recession. The West Midlands and Northern Ireland suffered the biggest losses between the 2016 referendum and the third quarter of 2019, with both economies more than 4 per cent smaller than they could have been if Remain had won the vote.
