Sky Poker - why?

Tikay10Tikay10 Member, Administrator, Moderator Posts: 172,170

In all the years (11, going on 12) that Sky Poker has been around, every complaint & compliment has been levelled at them.

So if you had to try to explain WHY you still play at Sky Poker, what reasons wold you give?

Be as honest as you like, but obv, nothing is to be gained or learned from gratuitous rudeness or sarcasm. It's a genuine enquiry, Sky Poker are really interested in your feedback.

Reasons should not be limited to the following, but may well include them if you wish, I've just included them to get you on the right track so to speak. These are reasons why you DO play here, not why you don't play here. (We might come to that another day).

Friendly site with a decent Community.

"Soft" site.

Games are against UK & RoI players only.

Third party software not permitted.

Tournaments with sensible finishing times.

Rewards Scheme, including weekly payments & Freerolls.

Decent Customer Care.

Good range of Promos, "always on".

Freerolls

Sky Poker Social-Media is helpful.

Site is reactive to requests to change things.

Site communicates well with the player-base.

Trustworthy brand, we know our money is safe.

Sky Poker Tour

Games are in £'s not $'s or €'s.

Sheer habit.

Other reasons (specify please)

If we get enough good & sensible replies, (20 or more) we will probably be able to find a few £11 UKOPS Mini entries to the best of them.

Over to you.

I used to play on Sky poker a few years ago as I did on a number of sites as I played more poker during that time.
I will be looking to play more on Sky Poker in the near future and the main reason for this would be the community that appears to be on the site. As I commented last week I played the SPT Glasgow and had a great experience with every player and staff member representing the site. I am hopeful of playing some more of these next year.
Another reason would be with my work situation I am not in a position to play tournaments with thousands of players that take hours upon hours to complete. I am looking for decent tournaments with reasonable finishing times with friendly people and Sky should provide that for me.

For me, it's generally the sum total of all the factors listed above.

One thing I would add though, which is unique to Sky, is that all the MTT's are 6max. I hate playing full ring and only ventured into tournaments once I'd started playing at Sky specifically because of this.

[ ]Friendly site with a decent Community.

Personally the "Friendly site" thing is independent of whether I play on a particular site or not nowadays. I would consider Sky a friendly site, relatively speaking, and this definitely applied to me in the past when getting into the game in 2011/12 and choosing Sky over other sites.

    [x] "Soft" site.

[ ] Games are against UK & RoI players only.

[x] Third party software not permitted.

I do own PT4 and do use it on sites that allow it, but I prefer playing without HUDs, people using seat scripts etc

[ ] Tournaments with sensible finishing times.

Applied more to me during my recreational fish days, not so much now, although I don't play MTTs much any more anyway.

[x] Rewards Scheme, including weekly payments & Freerolls.

    [ ] Decent Customer Care.

[x] Good range of Promos, "always on".

There are times when certain promos dissuade me from playing - i.e. a rakerace makes the games super reg infested and some weeks I just can't be arsed to grind out a tiny winrate against that player group. But overall, definitely a net positive for me.

    [x] Freerolls

    [ ] Sky Poker Social-Media is helpful.

[x] Site is reactive to requests to change things.

Definitely applies to listening to forum feedback & trying things. Well, most of the time... #AntesOnSky2019 #OneTime ;)

[x] Site communicates well with the player-base.

Applies to forum, not so sure about the majority of the player pool that don't use the forum

[x] Trustworthy brand, we know our money is safe.

    [x] Sky Poker Tour

    [x] Games are in £'s not $'s or €'s.

This is a big one for me - Can't be bothered with sites like 888 basically charging a second rake on my winnings via currency conversion at terrible rates upon withdrawal, or having to arrange swaps with other players which obviously involves some degree of risk and is dependent on someone wanting dollars on a particular site.

That said, if there were a site soft enough to compensate for currency exchange 'rake', I'd probably still play there.

    [ ] Sheer habit.

    Other reasons (specify please)

Ticked the ones you've listed that apply to me & added some stuff in bold.

Would say withdrawal speed (Via PayPal especially) is a positive - Takes no more than a couple of hours usually.

Additionally the availability of DYMs has kept me playing here in the past, as other sites don't necessarily spread these games any more due to the collusion risk.

Good stuff so far, though we need a lot more, keep it coming please.

only site I tried when I started playing warm welcome from the likes of dark angel and phantom got in to the forum (maybe a little to much ) and enjoyed the challenges at the time the 1000 dym plo8 was good for learning I tried another site but nearly all the rewards tried to steer you towards slots and that is my main leak so I only play poker on sky and keep the slot jockeying for elsewhere

started playing on Sky poker around 2012 never played online poker before only tried it because i got some poker tokens from Sky bet. Football and horse racing betting will always come first before poker but once i tried it i got the bug and started playing most night's after work for a bit fun at low stakes. After a few years of playing felt i was getting no way with my game but still enjoyed playing then had a look at sharkscope it was bad down four figure's. Another year went by checked sharkscope again down £4,000 2012-16 not good. Then a few thing's changed for the better, clicked on PL08 dym in error and enjoyed it started to move my game towards PL08. Then clicked on the forum not sure why i had not done this before :* . The forum was the game changer read some great advice by some good players never posted asking for advice just read other people's posts and pinched some of the advice given. By the start of 2018 i had wiped out the £4,000 mostly thanks to @markycash and the PL08 bounty league Mark had set up ( I really miss that league :( ). So a big thank you to the players who post advice and help others on the forum. Btw there is a great thread at the moment "Diary of a determined player" in the poker clinic.

Sorry for the poor grammar typing while playing :)

I play here because I feel a sense of impending doom when I play elsewhere. The reason? Huds. A player should not be able to know the exact frequency I check raised the turn on a dry board when blinds are 30 bigs effective, for example. That's **** ridiculous.

I always feel there's something sinister going on whenever I play elsewhere. Be it stables, collusion, ghosting. I'm totally against all of it.

Game quality is easily the biggest reason I put a decent part of my volume on Sky. There is no way to sugar coat it, there are just way more bad players per head on Sky than any other site.

I also like that there is no way to track hands without breaking the terms of service. I'm sure some do break the terms of service but I'm equally sure it's just a tiny minority of the player pool.

I don't like most of the promotions. I think they reward the already winning players too much and don't help losing players anywhere near enough. I've argued that point before and didn't win many/any people over but I stand by it.

I do think the site has a decent friendly community. I haven't helped much in that respect in the past but I am trying to curb my trolling instincts and feel that having a decent friendly community is definitely a positive thing.

I don't play many MTT's, mostly because I prefer freezeouts to BH's and I think there are too many BH's but it's not a big deal to me.

The brand is definitely trustworthy. I don't keep much of a bankroll on any site as I have been burned before and because deposits and withdrawals are so quick and easy, it makes zero sense to keep large amounts of money on any site. However, that said, if I were to start keeping more money on sites, Sky would definitely be one of the sites I would have the most trust in.

The site definitely communicates better with its customers than others. I have taken issue with some of the things @Tikay10 has said down the years. I recall having quite a long debate with him on the now defunct eatmystack forum years ago where I thought he was shilling and had a brief chat with him at DTD a long time ago where we didn't agree on whatever it is we were discussing. That said, I think I was probably wrong back then and he clearly has a passion for the site and cares about players.

I always recommend the site to other UK players. I think it has way more positives than negatives for recreational players. It's not perfect but a lot of it's imperfections keep the games playable, which is or should be the most important thing for everyone that plays on the site.

I play poker on Sky for a few of the reasons above.
    In no particular order -
    A) The site is UK only and played in £
    B) 6 max games suit my play
    C) A wide variety of buy-ins, which caters for rec and reg alike.
    D) Community, forum is a Massive part of why I have remained loyal to Sky since I joined.
    E) Quick withdrawal, with no doom switch once withdrawing 😊
    F) SPT’s - Another massive plus.
    G) Tikay, the site has an absolute star in this man.
    F) Part of D - The top players like Matt Bates are always willing to help others improve their game.

I play on Sky because it is the only site that has PLO8 dyms. I trust sky and after several thousand games I can count on 1 hand the amount of collusion I have seen. The player interaction is also very good on the plo8 tables, very few bad eggs.

fwiw the site used to be much softer than what it is now... but so was every other poker site
  • 68Trebor68Trebor Member Posts: 1,943

    Why?

The real draw for me is the forum. It is not about reading other people's threads or posting my own diary it is about the fact that suddenly your opponents at the table become personalities and this in turn leads to a feeling of belonging and with that belonging comes a sense of loyalty.
It is the only site I dabble on that gives me a sense of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out for those not down with the kids of today). With this comes a sense of it just not feeling right when on other sites.
I also love the fact that the tournies on here are a reasonable length for the working man and yet still have a decent structure.
Then there is the feeling that my money is safe and that problems get resolved in the correct manner.
And finally and perhaps most importantly it is a FUN site where I feel like an individual and not a number.

Been on sky since I was 18 enjoyed playin poker so learnt the game over the last 8 years like to think am alright always learning, Took it more serious from start of the year when I realised I can make a couple of quid.

Sky is a big community of UK players thats a good thing

MTT's best format for my game 6 max

most of the players are decent people & met some nice people along the way & some idiots but there everywere.

forums always a nice place I might not post much but do enjoy reading some of the stuff here.

anyway keep sky as it is & id be sticking around until I take down the wsop one day :)

Literally learnt the game playing the 2.20 deepstacks 4 years ago. 4 years on and the exact same games still run with almost the exact same players. Don't really know what to take from that...probably something about loyalty

The main points that keep me on sky vs other sites....

Currency - much prefer playing in £ vs $

Field size/tournament structure - like others have already said, field size/tourney structure really good for those who work and don't want to play for 9 hours to then finish 10th to a Mr Bates two-outer

Human feeling/interaction - Not only is the table chatter better on here than any other site I play on but I also prefer knowing that I'm playing against John123 from the West Midlands vs 025A12B from the Ukraine. It just feels a bit more human and the fact that everyone is playing from the UK and that people have the option of sharing their town/city is a really good thing. (Hope that made sense)

Pace at the tables - Other than the fact that the tables are 6 max one of my favourite things about sky is the speed at which you have to act. Love the lack of timebank I think it's a really good feature, if I could choose I would have an extra 5 seconds added (mostly for multi tabling purposes and reducing timeouts if I have a few tough decisions) but on every other site I play on the speed of pre and postflop play is much slower so I think Sky have done really well there.

Software - Already been mentioned but I do enjoy the lack of HUDs as well. I don't mind playing with them but I think it definitely levels the playing field slightly for those who want to be competitive but also want to play for fun and not have to be up against it.

Won't repeat any of the other points as they've been covered but I agree with most of them :)

    Well done Sky!

Excellent feedback from every contributor so far, thank you, but we need more, so keep it coming please.

The 6 handed is a big plus, easy cash out....but more like quick pay in system !
great forum and i appreciate the input of coaching that others give, some top stuff.
Would like to see more SPT events, and spread over other venues .
I hate when logged on for a game the table opens late only to see my blinds disappear , why does this problem drag on ?
Having no HUDS is massive + and the quick replies from sky over any problems is
    very good.

    Hi folks
I remember doing a sky poker survey bout 12 months ago asking why I play on the site, I put down half of what in Tikays op
For me I play on here due to habit and comfort the games I play have all the usual suspects I'm used to playing against.
The best thing about this site for me is the finish times of mtts it's great for the working man
Finally the forum can be addictive at times I love it and Tikay is so informative I think the forum would die if it wasn't for him

    In no particular order....

    LML & Richard Orford.
    Channel 365.
    James Hartigan & Joe Stapleton.

Sadly, all of the above are no longer with Sky Poker.

What still is with Sky Poker though....

Good choice of tournaments for all bank rolls.
A community forum for use by all, if required.
Play in £££££'s , not dollars (or even euros B) ).

Edit - Plus flirting with @Sky_Elf at Xmas time ;)

I have played on all the main sites in the past but only play on Sky these days.
I like the forum. It’s great getting to actually know the people you play with.
    The live events.
Dyms are a big draw for me. Very few sites run them these days.
    Field sizes in mtts.
Software obv isn’t great but i do really like how straightforward the lobbies are. It’s very easy to find the games you want to play. Admittedly this could just be because it’s what i’m used to.
    Playing in £
The ease in which i can deposit and withdraw.
Cc seem to get a tough ride at times. Personally i think that they’re very good. Make a call and you’re quickly through to someone and i think i’ve always been treated fairly and when there have been problems with the site i’ve been reimbursed.
    I like the promotions.
