Friendly atmosphere - with the odd exception
In my experience SPT’s are fantastic for a recreational player like myself. Great atmosphere, putting faces to screen names and enjoying some good company and banter with friends old and new.
As you may have seen , this weekend I did a little bit of the roving reporter job that Tikay normally does while he was playing. I have nothing but respect for Tony, but the levels of that respect went up for a couple of reasons this weekend.
One, my back was killing me come the end of the day as I hardly sat down walking between tables keeping tabs on the going’s on, even becoming Craig cu12’s personal waiter at one stage, getting the Geordie card king a drink as he feasted on other players chips.
During one of my wanderings I came back to Tikay’s table to find he had managed to get a much needed double up. He explained what had happened, his QQ was up against AA and he had rivered what had turned out to be the case Q . The chap Tony had beaten was chirping a little, I thought it was just a little bit of banter but, as I returned to the table during the evening, this guy kept getting louder and his general demeanour was becoming more aggressive. Not just toward Tony but other players as well. It didn’t seem to bother Tony, although it seemed to be affecting the enjoyment of some at the table.
Fast forward to day two, and this “gentleman “ came and sat to my immediate right at some stage. He was involved in a hand where his all in , holding Q8 ,on an XXQ flop was called by an AK . It was a huge pot 500k I think and he won.
This however was not enough for him, instead of being happy with what he thought was a “gift” he wanted to berate the player as he left, and kept reminding the table of it over and over. He was not going to keep his opinions to himself and his “ stage whispering “ just got louder as the day wore on.
I am disappointed to say that I let him get to me a bit, I understand that this is probably his tactic, he talked me out of a hand that I was way ahead in and sadly later his A8 beat my AK on the river in my exit hand. Another thing for me to work on going forward.
Does it reflect badly on me that later on, a huge roar and a jig of delight occurred in a hotel room in Manchester, after a report that his AA was beaten by A9 early on the final table?
Please do not judge me too harshly

    @pompeynic

This was my first SPT event, I got there pretty early as I wasn't too sure of the parking situation etc. I registered, had a quick chat with Tikay to say hello and then grabbed a seat waiting for the tourney to start. The guy in question came and sat next to me before it started. (I recognised his picture from the final table). I thought I would make some small talk and see if he was a Sky Poker player. I asked him where he had come from etc. I also asked if he had qualified through a satellite, he looked at me like I had three heads, why would someone of his supreme ability attempt to play satellites. He informed me he buys in direct to bigger events than this, his responses just seemed very dismissive, I was wondering whether it may just be his demeanour, but I won't post what I thought at the time (might overstep forum guidelines  ) .

I did out of curiosity put his name into hendon mob to see his live results, I always like to see if people who talk a big game have the results to back it up. Call me bitter but I must admit when I read how he busted it did bring a smile to my face.

Based on my encounter and everything I've read in this thread your jig of delight sounds justified.

    Weird sense of humour
I am not sure if people get my sense of humour sometimes.
I wondered if anyone would get my comment about the gentleman dressed in orange and whether his name was William or not during my reporting. It made me laugh in my head but it is always good if at least one person gets it.
On Sunday, someone wanted food at the table and during the discussion, the question was asked how he liked his chicken. He didn’t answer, grilled or fried the attractive serving lady asked, I added rather cheekily which do you prefer the breast or the thigh?
One chap at the table who obviously heard me grinned . I got it he said chuckling away.
I stole that line from a John Wayne movie “ the horse solders” . Great film, however, later on I wondered,in these days of political correctness, whether my sense of humour could get me in trouble one day.

    Great thread Nick, well done.

The "gentleman dressed in orange" was almost certainly Gerald David, who has an alter-ego of "Skullman" & appears to be skull obsessed.

He has a skull card guard (ridiculously oversized for a card guard to be honest), skull chips, skull baseball cap & all sorts. I'm not entirely sure what to make of it all, seems a bit weird to me, but each to their own & he's completely inoffensive, & were it not for his weird garb, you'd never notice him.

    Hi ,
I hope this will not put you off coming to future SPT’s, this chap appears to be the exception to the rule. Please do not think all players act like this. Come say hello and I will introduce you to other players if you like, I look forward to seeing you at future tournaments.

    That is the very man.
I have seen him in Manchester before, and the first thing that always pops into my head is “ William of Orange” nice enough guy, if I remember correctly he likes to see a flop.

    Ha, exactly that.

    Hi @pompeynic ,
No - this hasn't put me off, I will definitely be looking to play more SPT events. Next time I can make it, it would be good to meet some Sky players, put some names to faces.

    Cheers

    Hi all

@pompeynic - you are too kind to little old ladies

This tourney was my first real experience of big blind ante. As the shorty stack for all of day 2 (literally ALL of day 2) I definately felt the pressure when it was my turn to put most of my stack in when it was my turn. Having said that - I can honestly say I enjoyed it once I was over the shock. I can't believe I even managed to fold a few times in my big blind/ante contribution (pity I can't find a fold button online but hey ho  ).

I loved, loved, loved every second of the SPT tourney - even when I exited 2 hands before the end of day 1 (my own fault - can't blame the cards or the RNG lol).

I loved meeting up with SPTers - both old and new (or should I say "seasoned"?). Was great to put faces to names (even if I forget quite quickly so will need reminding again next time we meet). Tikay, James, Sam, Kirsty and all put on a great tournament. The venue was great, the dealers were great, the daquiries were really great and the craic was mighty as we'd say in Ireland.

Huge thanks to Darkangel for keeping me sane (well - relatively sane) and to my drinking buddies - Geldy, Madprof, SidV79, Misty and all. Special thanks to @pompeynic for the great updates. I think I was having as much fun reading his great writing style as I was playing the tourney.

    Roll on the next one...........

Unfortunately I didn't make it to this one.

One thing I would like to see is a side event or 2.

Now that you no longer start with 500bb, a lot of people are busting on day one. Maybe there is space for a turbo in the evening, then another one day event at the same time as day 2...

Something like a nightly ÂŁ50 turbo/ KO/ Win the button/ PLO/ PLO8 then a ÂŁ50/ÂŁ100 tournament at the same time as day 2 makes sense to me.

Hi Mr Melt, glad to hear you are ok,
They had a bounty hunter on day two. I think the problem is space/tables/ dealers.
Although there were a couple of tables spare on day 1b,I noticed, people were still sat around waiting to get into the tournament. Maybe they have to have tables open for cash regulars?
Personally I love the idea of a four card game. That would be fun.
  • Tikay10Tikay10 Member, Administrator, Moderator Posts: 172,169

Sky Poker would love to have a Sidey or 2, but as @pompeynic noted, lack of space & dealers is a bit of a headache to be honest.

On the Friday & Saturday at Manchester, folks were still on the Alternate List when Late Reg closed, but there were not enough dealers to open new tables. Not acceptable really, & Sky Poker have spoken to 235 about it, but it is a problem space-wise.

There is a fun MTT on the Sunday night which most of the SPT-ers play, & seem to be well-received.

You 2 (Melty & Nick) both coming to Glasgow?

Glasgow might be like Arnhem for me Tony.
