That race encompassed all that we love & loathe about sport.
Sir Erec - a most beautiful looking & calm animal - shed a shoe before the start, & was as calm & relaxed as you can imagine, especially for an 4 year old entire, then goes badly wrong in the race & ends up in the knackers van.
Meanwhile, the unconsidered winner almost shed his jockey at the first after stumbling, it was a wonderful feat just to stay aboard, then gets up to win.
i was listening on radio what actually happened, he didnt fall did he.
No, looked like he broke a leg. Was not a fall or a stumble, he just "went wrong".
Saddest moment of the Festival by far.
watched the race looked like his lower leg just broke on landing .. same leg as shoe had to be refitted to .. he looked a stunning horse so calm and no signs anything was upsetting him during race ... so sad for all connections... and the guy who put 10k in cash on him on the race course
Never understand why straight put down let them grow old in a pasture modern sciences do incredible things the one true thing i hate about the sport
They have to put them down as they can't get them back to the stable, or anywhere else, horses can't stand on 3 legs for more than a few minutes, & there's just no way to get them home on 3 legs. Even valuable stud prospects (on the flat) are almost never able to be saved if they break a leg whilst racing. Given the worth of some flat racing horses, if there were a way to save them, they would, but in 99% of the cases there's nothing that can be done.

Ugh. Horrible to see what happened to Sir Erec.

Don't you just love sport?
So sad for Sir Erec though.

Saddest moment of the Festival by far.
Amazing scenes, as jockey Harry Skelton wins the race his fiancee Bridget Andrews won last year.

Meanwhile, the stands go silent whilst the Bookies cheer to the rafters as the Potato Race goes to a 50/1 shot. That's busted most of the accas.
