Carlton Palmer getting England caps was a pretty impressive achievement and
Well that's an angle I never expected. Fair comment though.
Apparently he was one of the fittest and best box to box runners with a massive 'engine' according to my mates at Sheffield Wednesday. Oh yes...... that was according to Carlton
EDIT: To be fair to him, Ron Atkinson did say the same.
Federer recently won his 100th ATP tour level tournament, including 20 Grand Slams. Given that he has done so in an era when he has had to compete with two of the other best players of all time (Nadal and Djokovic), I think he must go down as one of the all time greats of any sport.
5 Olympic golds and 9 World Championship golds. In a sport where the training and physical effort is probably more demanding than any other. You don't see darts players or snookerists physically sick through exertion, actually you don't see them getting up at 4 am on a winters morning to train do you?

Steve Redgrave - Sir Steven Redgrave - might actually be the greatest ever British sportsman.
You mention darts there, & I included Phil Taylor as a candidate, but I'm not entirely sure that Darts is a sport. Here's a dictionary definition;
an activity involving physical exertion and skill
Very little exertion in Darts, come to think of it, not much skill either.
Snooker has very little "exertion" too I suppose, but it does require a very high degree of skill.

Ron Atkinson also memorably said of Carlton:-
"The quickest man in football over 5 yards...mind you, have you seen his first touch? He can trap the ball farther than I can kick it."

Oh, sorry, you said British....forgot he was Welsh.
Although that said , I am resisting the temptation to post about Bercows ruling over there

Note to self, read thread title before posting.
I've checked and he is definitely British.
