There’s no clear government or local council position on council tax payments at the moment.
This is what’s known as a priority Debt..not one you can ignore lightly. This DD isn’t one you can just delete and ignore as if you miss 3 payments they can request you pay the full amount
I pay my council tax by 10 monthly instalments Apr-Jan with a payment holiday in Feb and March
So for me that £180.00 a month for 10 equal payments from April...with NO income till at least mid June...or maybe later I have today reduced and deleted those DD/SO I know I can’t afford
Frankly given the situation we are all in, I alongside many others need that payment ‘holiday ‘ now not next February...
If you agree to the principle, please share the link far and wide...if not, thanks for reading and go back to your tables!

( I’m a law abiding person who had paid my taxes all my life and had 2 weeks dole money my entire time- I want to pay my way...just looking for the local councils to become a little more creative/flexible...)

I contacted my mortgage co today and they are not offering a 3 month 'holiday' ( which normally means adding on the 3 months to your mortgage period with the additional interest)..the most they would offer was either reduced payment per month OR a 2 month holiday where the interest was recalculated back into my payment from the start month 3...which tbf isn't a lot
I'll worry about it in June!!
Government policy does on many occasions define peoples ability to earn money. When having an income is not possible tax should not be payable.
This circumstance is somewhat different but is still a type of Government intervention preventing people from earning money.
Government reserves or borrowing should be used to bridge the gap.
Just in case nothing happens in time though, there is a way that you can have a near 2 month Sabbatical with your Council Tax ..... (or this certainly applies in Cornwall, and I'm sure would be the same elsewhere, particularly in these difficult times)
If you ring up the Council and explain the difficulties you're having, they will let you put your Council Tax payment back by one month.
Then the following month you can set up to pay to pay by Direct Debit, but usually (and what they don't tell you) they have different days of the month you can pay on. The latest here in Cornwall is 20th of the Month. So set it up for then, and a few days before (minimum 3 days) cancel the Direct Debit to the Council with your Bank. This will result in the Council sending out a letter to pay the Instalment within 7 days, which has given you virtually 2 months to pay.
If they say the whole amount is due, you explain it's impossible to pay the full amount and you need to carry on paying by instalments.
Later on in the Year (Xmas time/January) you can take another one month payment holiday because all they are interested in is getting the full amount by the start of the next Council Tax year.
Obviously I found all this out from a friend /
Remember laws are based on compliance if everyone stopped payment.
My pet hate at the minute is TV license can everyone please stop paying. Thanks in advance. cough!
Clearly I'm not as devious as
