Just in case nothing happens in time though, there is a way that you can have a near 2 month Sabbatical with your Council Tax ..... (or this certainly applies in Cornwall, and I'm sure would be the same elsewhere, particularly in these difficult times)
If you ring up the Council and explain the difficulties you're having, they will let you put your Council Tax payment back by one month. Then the following month you can set up to pay to pay by Direct Debit, but usually (and what they don't tell you) they have different days of the month you can pay on. The latest here in Cornwall is 20th of the Month. So set it up for then, and a few days before (minimum 3 days) cancel the Direct Debit to the Council with your Bank. This will result in the Council sending out a letter to pay the Instalment within 7 days, which has given you virtually 2 months to pay.
If they say the whole amount is due, you explain it's impossible to pay the full amount and you need to carry on paying by instalments.
Later on in the Year (Xmas time/January) you can take another one month payment holiday because all they are interested in is getting the full amount by the start of the next Council Tax year.
