Beating coronavirus blues: How small businesses are diversifying to survive, from the garden centre that delivers to the pubs pulling pints to go

Small businesses have been cast into crisis by the coronavirus outbreak. Many have been forced to shut up shop, with thousands of staff taking reduced pay or being made redundant. But some have found ingenious ways to diversify. Andrew O'Connor and Phil Waters (pictured) chefs at the Full Moon Pub in Chesham, Buckinghamshire have turned their hands to churning out dozens of ready-to-cook meals for customers to take home.

Before the end of this initial 3-week period, they are going to have to extend it. The growth in numbers leaves little choice.

But there are 3 important factors to remember.

Firstly, the people need to see an end in sight before too long. Or people will cease to follow the rules.

Secondly, this Government (and indeed the world) cannot (economically) afford for this to go on too long. By that, I mean the lockdown, not the virus itself.

Thirdly, it takes time to restart the economy. Infrastructures need time to scale up/restart.

I predict that there will be an additional 3-week period announced. But, before that is up, we will be given a definite date when various restrictions will be lifted.

Cricketers run from police enforcing coronavirus lockdown

A group of up to 30 men ran from officers policing the coronavirus lockdown after they were caught playing cricket in a London park.
The Metropolitan Police said the group was found flouting Covid-19 restrictions at Chandos Recreation Ground, in Edgware, north-west London, on Tuesday.
A video posted online shows the men fleeing from officers. Some pick up items of clothing from the grass as they run away, while others appear to leave their belongings behind.

Almost all of Thursday's papers convey the same message - there is "no end in sight" to the UK's coronavirus lockdown.
The Sun believes it will last until May, saying the 938 deaths recorded in the UK on Wednesday surpassed Italy's worst daily figure - and it adds the outbreak's peak could still be 10 days away.
The weather is also a serious cause for concern in Downing Street, according to the paper - with fears that people could defy official advice and head out to enjoy the bank holiday sunshine.
The Guardian reports that some police chiefs are also concerned and are calling on the government to consider tightening the restrictions. The options are said to include more stringent curbs on driving long distances and legislation to ensure that people do not exercise more than once a day.

The Daily Mail says there are growing concerns about the economic damage caused by the lockdown - highlighting the World Trade Organization's warning that it could result in the "deepest recession in our lifetime".
It is no wonder, according to the Times, that the Chancellor Rishi Sunak is leading calls within government for it to start preparing an exit strategy.
The Financial Times reports that officials have begun exploring the idea of initially removing restrictions for younger workers first. It says the proposals are in a paper drawn up by economists at Warwick University. They suggest that if the measures are eased for people aged 20 to 30 who do not live with their parents, it could release 4.2 million people who would be unlikely to become seriously ill.
The Times has news of an initiative to use NHS laboratories to carry out tens of thousands antibody tests to try to establish whether people have already recovered from the virus - and are likely to be immune. It says it is being coordinated by the President of the Royal College of Pathologists Jo Martin.
But the Daily Telegraph says this kind of testing is facing a setback because a team from a Chinese university found that some patients who recovered had low levels of antibodies in their system.

I think you should have said that more people would cease to follow the rules as many haven't from day one.

Secondly, this Government (and indeed the world) cannot (economically) afford for this to go on too long. By that, I mean the lockdown, not the virus itself.

I don't think the affordability aspect makes it any easier to escape.

Thirdly, it takes time to restart the economy. Infrastructures need time to scale up/restart.

I predict that there will be an additional 3-week period announced. But, before that is up, we will be given a definite date when various restrictions will be lifted.

    This will be extremely difficult.

I found the following article peculiar.
Why would anyone express a statistic, as one third of five. The answer is obviously 1.66666.
How could there be 1.6666 people.
So was it one or two?
I think you have to assume two.
So why didn't they want to be accurate and just say two?
    Or perhaps 40%?
More importantly if there have been 15 deaths since the outbreak started, and only two have been attributed to coronavirus, and the others haven't, purely through a lack of testing, then doesn't that make us as bad as the Chinese?

Care home rocked by coronavirus with 15 deaths during pandemic

A care home for elderly people has seen 15 of its residents die during the coronavirus pandemic.
A third of five of the deaths at Castletroy Residential Home in Luton, Bedfordshire had tested positive for Covid-19.
A Public Health England (PHE) spokeswoman said the other 10 who died have not been tested for coronavirus.

But a PHE statement said: "In occasions where some cases have already been tested positive in a care home, we do not advise testing of new cases as it will not change the public health management."

The home has 69 beds for elderly people with nursing or personal care needs.

Emily Maitlis praised as she slams 'misleading' language used amid coronavirus crisis

Emily Maitlis has been praised for her “extraordinary” introduction to BBC’s Newsnight in which she slammed “misleading” language surrounding the coronavirus crisis.
The host appeared to take aim at ministers for suggesting Covid-19 could be survived by showing “fortitude” and “strength of character”.
Opening Wednesday night’s programme, Maitlis also bluntly dismissed the idea that the illness is a “great leveller,” describing this as a “myth that needs debunking”.
Viewers took to social media to praise the presenter of the flagship political show, leading to her name trending on Twitter into the early hours of Thursday.

Maitlis began: “They tell us coronavirus is a great leveller. It’s not. It’s much, much harder if you’re poor. How do we stop it making social inequality even greater?”
“You do not survive the illness through fortitude and strength of character, whatever the Prime Minister’s colleagues will tell us,”
    Maitlis said.
“And the disease is not a great leveller, the consequences of which everyone - rich or poor - suffers the same.”
One commenter said of the opening: “As great and as brief a comment on the truth of the pandemic as we’ve yet seen.”
Another wrote: “This virus is not affecting everyone equally. We need to look after our most vulnerable. Excellently put by Emily Maitlis.”
Others described the opening message as "extraordinary" and "powerful".
Maitlis said that some language used amid the pandemic has “often felt trite and misleading”.
And she said it was a "myth" character plays a part in how well a person can fight the coronavirus. This was in an apparent reference to the language used by ministers such as Dominic Raab as they spoke of Mr Johnson's battle with the illness.
"I'm confident he'll pull through," said Foreign Secretary Mr Raab as he addressed the nation following the Prime Minister being taken into intensive care.
"because if there's one thing I know about this prime minister, he's a fighter".

Three frontline NHS nurses who were forced to use bin bags because they didn't have the right protective equipment ALL test positive for the coronavirus

Three nurses from Northwick Park hospital in London who posed last month while wearing protective equipment made from bin bags have been diagnosed with Covid 19. Northwick Park Hospital was the first in the country to declare a critical incident after an influx of coronavirus patients. More than half of staff on one ward have reportedly contracted the virus and hospital bosses have been blamed for failing to provide them with suitable PPE.

It's MAD-chester! Greater Manchester Police shut down 494 house parties and 166 street gatherings with DJs, fireworks and BOUNCY CASTLES as covidiots flouted lockdown last weekend

Police in Greater Manchester have revealed they were called out to 494 house parties (in green) over four days despite the coronavirus restrictions. Between Saturday and Tuesday, officers also had to deal with 166 street parties (in brown), 122 group gatherings for sporting activities (in red) and 173 gatherings in parks (in light blue). The figures were released as an appeal was launched, involving various personalities in the region, urging people to stay at home over the forthcoming Easter weekend. Among those sending home made video messages were Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford, his former team-mate Michael Carrick, Manchester City player Steph Houghton, Dan Brocklebank who plays vicar Billy in Coronation Street and Happy Mondays singer Shaun Ryder.

    I've told you before.
Stop believing the hysterical cobblers spouted by the Daily Fascist. Although this time the GMP are hardly helping.

I watched the interview in relation to this. That is how many times GMP were called out last weekend to alleged breaches.
The spokesman readily agreed that various of these calls did not involve breaches. For example, the many street parties where social distancing is rigorously adhered to.

Quite why GMP feel able to provide precise figures on call-outs, and none whatsoever in relation to which ones actually involved real breaches, beggars belief. So they were NOT called out to 494 house parties-they investigated the possibility that 494 were taking place. And CBA to tell us how many there were. So, on the 1 hand, precise figures. On the other, "some" were irrelevant. "Some" involved DJs. How many? 10? 100? 480?

Makes GMP look busy. At the cost of actual accurate, meaningful figures.

This is just an obvious typo. The answer is that it’s 5, not 1.66.

There were 15 deaths, a third of those had tested positive. It says ‘the other 10’ had not been tested.

This is just an obvious typo. The answer is that it’s 5, not 1.66.

There were 15 deaths, a third of those had tested positive. It says ‘the other 10’ had not been tested.
    Good thinking.

Though still a problem if we are only counting a smallish percentage of deaths through lack of testing.

    Thats very good.
    Agree.

42.14% of statistics are made up on the spot...

There are THREE distinct strains of the novel coronavirus in the world and the virus 'may be mutating to thrive in different immune systems'

Methods used to trace the prehistoric migration of ancient humans was adapted by researchers at the University of Cambridge to track the spread of SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19. Researchers from the University of Cambridge found the virus now seen in Wuhan, China and East Asia - ground-zero for the outbreak - is not the original variety. Instead, this strain (known as type B) is derived from the original SARS-CoV-2 virus which jumped into humans from bats via pangolins (type A). Type A is the version now most prevalent in America and Australia. Another variation, called type C, descended from Wuhan's type B, and spread to Europe via Singapore.
